High Performance AM/FM Portable Radio built with Simplicity

... A Good Radio Should be Easy to Use

The new CC Radio-EP PRO is an enhanced version of the original EP. Simple controls with superior selectivity and sensitivity. The portable CCRadio-EP PRO could be considered a super radio; built for ease of use and outstanding long-range AM with our C. Crane patented Twin Coil Ferrite® AM Antenna. FM performance is excellent. Best AM radio for the money. The dial accuracy and frequency stability of the EP PRO is superior to our original EP model.

Great for listening to news talk, NPR®, music, and sports. The EP PRO has separate bass and treble adjustment controls for defined music and accurate and lively voice reproduction.

A large, 5-inch speaker is combined with a hi-fidelity amplifier. AM programs can be adjusted to sound similar to FM because of a "Wide/Narrow" enhancement switch and the fine tuning control of the Twin Coil Ferrite Antenna

Weight: 4.5 lbs. (without batteries). Size: 11.4" W x 7.3" H x 2.75" D. runs on included 6V AC adapter or battery operated (4) "D" batteries (not included).

General Features:
  • Accurate analog tuning with digital signal processing
  • Patented Twin coil Ferrite® AM antenna
  • Audio tuned for voice clarity
  • Line-in and 1/8" stereo headphone jack
  • Lighted analog display
  • AM/FM
  • External antenna connections: spring loaded for AM and "F" connector for FM

Letdown
I ordered the EP-Pro based on all the hype about its AM sensitivity. I listen to mostly AM, and at night. I wanted a radio that could pull in far away stations clearly. My first impression, taking it out of the box, was that it reminded me of those landline phones with the giant dialpad, geared for older people or visually impaired. The radio is clearly larger than it needs to be. On the plus side, itsstreamlined controls and oversized tuning dial makeit simple for anyone to operate. But the reason I purchased it was for its touted AM reception. So I waited until night to see if the boasted sensitivity was as good as what was claimed. I didn't need the generous 60 days C Crane gives you in theirsatisfaction guarantee. I justneeded one. Verdict I found AM sensitivity to be no better than with my other three radios, all of which cost less and are better constructed. TheEP-Pro also gave off a lot of static, even on DC power, noise that was minimal or absent in the others. Speaker s

A good basic radio
I recently received the EP Pro and compared it to my older CCranePlus, both which have the twin ferrite antenna. The reception for both is excellent, but not exceptional and both appeared very similar in reception of weak stations, for both daytime and nighttime. I am returning the Ep Pro since it doesn't provide any improvement reception over the CCranePlus.
PROS
Excellent reception, day night. Nice night light and overall basic tuning features.

CONS
The dial is a little off in it's precision for tuning, the cabinet is a bit on the cheap side. No connecting ground plug.

BEST USES
Best for those looking for a budget radio with good reception.

Outstanding Radio
I have listened to this radio nearly every day since I bought it six months ago and I am very pleased, especially with it's ability to pick up a distant low power AM station.
PROS
Great sound. The speaker is fairly robust and it has good sound even on AM. A tunable gain control helps zero in on weak signals.

Hate mine
Back to my regular EP. Very glad I kept it around. I have a later production model and the soft muting is horrible and manufacturers should GET RID OF IT. When I power the radio on, it sounds like someone fired a shot. Supposedly these issues were supposed to have been addressed but doesn't sound that way.
PROS
FM sensitivity-that's it.

great radio
I live in an area it gets very poor reception. I have several radios some are c-crane radios. Most of them work fairly well but because of the area I'm in reception can be hard to get. After conferring with one of the staff members here they suggested the EP pro and felt that it would drastically increase reception. I didn't buy it on this website, I got it from Amazon. The first one I got had something rattling around inside probably just a little piece of solder but I didn't want to take any chances and returned it to Amazon and they promptly sent me a new one. I cannot tell you how satisfied I am with this radio. The reception is fantastic. I have pulled in stations almost 2,000 miles away. For the area that I am in this is more than fantastic. I recommend if you're looking for a radio that can pull the stations in for you then this is the one for you.

What an amazing radio! Dial in to the sweet spot of the frequency and get amazing fidelity. The antenna picks up difficult signals and with treble and bass you can get a rich wonderful sound. AM sounds better than any radio I have listened to and FM is even richer. Low price for this level of craftsmanship. It's the only place to buy a radio.

One of the best portible radios
Easy to use radio. Great reception for FM use. flat output via the headphone jack if the base and trouble are set to the center. Can pull stations unlike most radios. I only wish the radio didn't go to mono as easily. My perfect radio would be stereo at all costs unless you manually switch it to mono. I know this means it could be noisy stereo. Wide-band AM would be great too, as in 20kHZ to 10kHZ. AM stereo support would be nice along with external antenna connections for AM/FM. a lock switch. but all in all, you are getting an excellent radio. This is what these guys do and they know their stuff. Highly rec amended!
PROS
Easy to use, Great FM reception, sound quality. Portable.

CONS
no lock switch. no line out jack. no external AM/FM antenna connections, no wide-band AM, no AM Stereo.

BEST USES

EP PRO ferrite twin coil
This little radio delivers. At first after reading the instructions, I couldn't get any AM reception, I was just sick. I live in a mountain canyon and a powerful AM is all I can get here. Then after about 15 min of being powered up, I started getting decent signals across the band. I don't know why the delay, almost like a coil saturation delay? Anyway, I am more than happy. Don't panic if your AM doesn't work for the first 15 minutes.

EP-Pro shockingly good performance
As soon as I received my EP Pro, I installed batteries and switched to AM. Not expecting anything at all, I tuned to 780 kHz for WBBM in Chicago...around 800 miles away! And there it was, a clear as if it was a local Dallas station! Note that this was late afternoon in spring, not a cold winter night, when one might expect good medium wave propagation. I was amazed! And FM provided equally good reception. This is the best performing portable AM/FM radio I have ever owned. Build quality is excellent. I will continue to buy products from C Crane.

Excellent Reception and Sound
Purchased this radio for camping. Needed something portable with good FM reception and sound. Works better than expected. Batteries last way longer than expected too. Nice feature is line input. If I have access to Wi-fi can connect my phone to use as a speaker rather than carry around separate blue tooth. Would highly recommend.
PROS
Great reception and sound. Line input is nice feature. Nicely sized for portability.

CONS
Wish it also had weather band. Would be so nice while camping. My old sony had AM/FM/Weather but reception and sound weren't any where near as good. This radio would be near perfect if it had weather too. I know the DSP chip is capable. CCrane can you please add weather?

Nice Radio
This is a fun radio. The sensitivity on both AM and FM along with sound clarity makes it a joy to both DX and listed to. The AM fine tuning knob does make a difference when pulling in weaker or distant stations. I like the narrow and wide band selector for AM as well. Also, customer service was very helpful when I ran into an issue when changing batteries to another set. Apparently, it was discovered that they were not all of the same strength and the radio would make a popping sound and turn off while tuning. It works fine now with a newly recharged set of batteries.
PROS
Sensitivity for distant stations i.e., DXing and sound quality.

CONS
Popping sound when turning radio on as others have mentioned. Not really an issue but noticeable.

BEST USES
DXing and portability.

Overall great radio for MW dx and voice.
This review is of both the first version - without the 9/10 khz switch - and the later version. I had the first version a few days when I spotted the newer version on the same retailer's shelves. The retailer BiMart kindly let me trade in the older version for the newer. The differences between the two are not as great as you might think. Both versions have a pop on startup but it is not as loud on the second version. The frequency readout is closer to accurate on the second version but not perfect. For either version, you must take into account the error factor in determining how far up or down the dial you must tune to get the frequency you want. Neither of these is a big deal. The false signal peaking of the first version is absent in the second version. This is not as significant as you might expect. The false peaking is an annoyance that you can quickly get used to. More significant is the spatter that a strong signal will make on adjacent frequencies, blocking weaker signals on th

Great Features; Dial Accuracy Not so Much...
This is a great sounding and well built AM/FM radio. Even in the daytime in pulls in many AM stations 100 miles away in Los Angeles. Tonal quality on FM is excellent. My one disappointment is the dial accuracy. I'm not expecting digital readout accuracy on an analog dial. But my EP Pro is pretty far off. An AM station on 1070kHz has to be tuned to closed to 1200 kHz. The results are similar on FM. If you can live with this, the EP Pro is still a good value due to its sensitivity and sound quality.

Excellent Radio
I purchased this radio to use at a remote mountain cabin in the Sierras and it has not disappointed! I was amazed at how many more stations were out there that my old radio could not pull in. I have read some complaints about the tuning but haven't had any issues thus far. The fine tuning knob really makes a difference on distant or weak stations. So far I can listen to local stations in addition to some of the big boomers from Los Angeles and San Francisco during the daytime. At night there is a whole new universe out there. the most distant station I have received in the short time I have been using the radio is KOA, 850 in Denver Colorado.
PROS
Very sensitive radio, great for pulling in weak or distant radio stations. Has very good FM reception as well

CONS
Regarding the radio itself there are only two features I would have preferred. The ability to receive NOAA weather forecasts and alerts would have been helpful. Also I really like a digital reading of each station so that I could return to weaker stations with greater ease. But this is one heck of a radio!

BEST USES
Anywhere you need a good radio, especially if you spend time in remote areas with poor reception.

Great radio! Great price!
As if I needed another radio from CCrane, This one caught my eye so I just had to have it. I'm very pleased with my purchase and it works Great. Stations on AM and FM come in great and all I have to do to get good reception is either turn the radio or antenna and they come in. Tuning and volume work great and I've put 4D batteries in it and leave it on all night to a quiet music FM station and the light makes a great nightlight. Easy to carry and not heavy for me at all even with batteries. I'm not sorry for buying and will keep my eye on your site to see what else I can get someday.
PROS
all I can think of is it's a great radio and works great for me. Glad I bought it.

CONS
The only Con I can think of is the power supply is kind of big and heavy. Would like to see a built in one on the radio and just a power cord to connect it to AC. This is a minor issue and doesn't take away from the radio's greatness.

BEST USES

PROS

CONS

CCRadio - EP PRO AM FM
PROS
NICE LOOKING RADIO, REALLY LIKE THE LIGHTED DISPLAY ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT AND THE FINE TUNING FOR AM IS GREAT. SOUND OF THE UNIT IS VERY RESPECTABLE. RECEPTION ON FM SUPER. A QUALITY BUILT RADIO.

CONS
AM TUNING IS NOT SUPPOSE TO BE MUTED. I REALLY ENJOY THE MANUAL TUNING OF AM STATIONS. THE ORIGINAL EP RADIO WAS MUCH BETTER THAN THE NEW UNIT IN SO FAR AS THE TUNING GOES. I AM AN OLD TIMER RADIO DXER AND THE MOST OF THE FUN OF TUNING AM IS BEING ABLE TO HEAR WHEN YOU ARE APPROACHING A STATION.

Works great
At first I was not sure it was better then my older one. Then one day there was a click and it seemed to work better, and it is better then older model. I find it to work better for FM especially. I added a small AM antenna and it improved reception. I must mention we are in a dead zone for reception so this radio is great as I get AM stations.
PROS
Works much better then old model. Nice size Even though power supple is larger it does not get hot.

Disappointed in this radio
Big disappointment compared to my first two cranes. Tuning for distant am signals is practically impossible to move your hand that small amount. When you finally zero in on signal they fade and disappear unless you re tune and after a few mins it's back to fading. Oh my power cord plug seems to be separating where the two pieces fit together.
PROS

CONS
Does a pretty poor job of pulling in distant am signals at night which is when I use it and when am signals are easiest to get

Simple to use. Tunes like an analog but receives like a state-of-the-art digital radio it is DSP!. Full-time lighted dial is great! The sound from the large speaker is excellent! Twin coil antenna nulls out locals and brings in DX.

CONS
None, once you get used to how it tunes into a station.

BEST USES
It's a DX machine, but it's great for everyday use provides excellent sound! The 21st century version of the GE Super Radio!

EP PRO is really different from the original EP
This radio looks almost identical to its predecessor, but is totally different. This new one has a different feel when tuning - go slow to reap the rewards of the radio's sensitivity - but the tuning is much more accurate than before, and the AM sound is surprisingly clear. The FM is a huge improvement, and with headphones sounds quite spectacular with no loss in selectivity. I'm glad I bought it, even though I have hundreds of radios and found it hard to justfy my purchase in the beginning.
PROS
FM tuning, sound, and selectivityGood for AM DX receptionUnusually clear AM toneEasy to use antenna fine tuning for AM

CONS
A bit large and heavy with batteries , but forgiveable to accommodate a good internal antenna, and nice built-in speaker.AM tuning takes some time to get used to. It looks like an analog radio, but tunes like a digital, so you can miss weaker stations if you proceed too quickly

BEST USES
AM or FM DX, or general broadcast band listening.A good gift for someone who prefers a more traditional style radio

Back to Basics
This is a basic AM/FM radio with two add- ons that really make a difference with AM reception. C Crane's adjustable Twin Coil AM antenna and a wide/narrow switch helps bring in distant stations especially at night. It's new DSP tuning is quirky until you understand the trick in tuning AM stations, tune slowly! When the radio finds the station it locks on to it. FM tuning is spot on. If you use headphones or connect the Pro by the headphone jack to amplified speakers stereo reception is available. Sound is very good using the separate bass and treble controls.
PROS
Great DXer on AM stationsGreat soundSimple controlsNice dial light for low light tuningBatteries and AC wall wart power supplyFM tuning is spot on plus stereoExternal antenna connections on back

CONS
Quirky DSP tuning on AMPopping noise on startup my GE Superadio II also does this

Awesome AM DXer
Wanted another AM/FM radio with good AM reception for work and backyard listening. Only keep my CCrane 2E for house use only don't like taking that outside. EP Pro doesn't disappoint great for AM DXing on par with my 2E.
PROS
Sound, narrow wide adjust button and adjustable ferrite antenna knob

CONS
Wish it had regular plug external AM antenna output.

High Current Use by this radio?
I ordered the latest C Crane EP Pro only to find that it would only run on brand new fullpower batteries or the AC supply. Batteries that would power any of my analog radios would not work in the EP PRO. I tested the EP Pro current use with an ammeter current draw was very high.... much higher than a true analog radio. I returned my EP Pro radio and I'll stick with myC Crane EP .version.
PROS
Not any given the issue i noted

CONS
Bad design? Poor Quality Control?

Improved
The mish-mash of mixing products that plagued the original EP on the upper half of the dial has been fixed with the chip that the set is based upon. This is in reality, an analog dial tuning digitally 10 KHz at a time across the dial...there is no off tuning capability. This set will not receive properly in countries that use 9Khz separation of stations. A quirk of the chip is soft muting that is not as forgiving as the soft muting on the Crane Skywave radio. The radio is very sensitive, as sensitive as the rest of the 100mm antenna sets, but weak stations are muted. The result is that weak stations cannot be turned up to a comfortable volume. This is especially true on headphones...the speaker delivers a slightly greater volume. On headphones, listening to a weak station with ordinary ambient noise such as would be found outdoors would be problematic. That said, the set is a much better performer in an urban setting with a number of local am radio stations than the original EP.
PROS
Sensitivity, selectivity, tone controls, immunity to mixing products. Good antenna peaking with the provided control.

CONS
Soft muting not sufficiently forgiving.

Just what I wanted!
Hoping the EP Pro would finally allow me to retire my 14 year old GE Superadio III. The EP Pro does the job and has some notable improvements. There is greatly improved tuning sensitivity, a longer telescoping antenna, and separate bass/treble controls. Thank you, C. Crane!
PROS
Simple analog tuning, multiple sensitivity controls, sturdy construction, very good reception from distant signals

So disappointed
I was very disappointed in the bugs which Crane now admits. It does not perform to the level of the radiate replaces.
PROS
Nice looking -well built

CONS
Makes pop noise when turned on. Poor channel selectivity. 70 of the volume of the original EP. Expected more from Crane....
