Emergencies Strike Without Warning. Be Prepared with Reliable Communication.
The CC Solar Observer is a simple, affordable and compact radio with enhanced reception and audio performance. For emergency use it can be powered in four different ways and can charge many different USB type devices including cell phones in a pinch. Many of our customers use it as their main radio.
"Our emergency radio was born in 1992 when we experienced three large earthquakes in Northern California in 17 hours. Communication and services, including electricity, were hopelessly overloaded. In the Crane home shards of broken glass were everywhere and so were bare feet. All of our flashlights had been over used by our blessed children. We vowed to make a good emergency radio so we would never be in this situation again." Bob Crane
This customer could not have said it better: "I have had only one, thank you Lord, occasion to use this in an emergency situation and it worked flawlessly. (I was the) Only one in the area with radio for two days of power loss... Thank you CCrane!!" vpipes - Dufur, Or.

The Observer radio has been in daily use at my house for a number of years, does its job well. It has definitely held up over time, which is more than I can say for several other wind-up products I've tried lanterns. My only complaint is that the rubberized finish on the Observer has become quite sticky, no amount of cleaning soap, alcohol, . . . seems to help.
Good radio / reliable, well-made.
Surface treatment has deteriorated over the 5?-7? years I've owned it, to the point where I can barely touch the thing. It feel like it is covered with partially dried contact cement. Something wrong with the coating, unless that has been addressed since I bought this one.
Leave it in one place, charge it from the wall socket don't have to touch it, wait for the real emergency to have to0 handle it.

We have a tiny camping trailer and this radio is perfect for taking along on camping trips. Decent sensitivity and selectivity in an easy to use radio. WX radio is nice as is the flashlight and lighted tuning dial. Can play on built-in rechargeable battery, AA batteries and AC adapter. Can be recharged via solar panel and wind up crank when AC is not available.
Small.Easy to use.Lighted tuning dial. Many ways to power the radio.
Camping.Useful during power outages.

To address the issue of phone charging on page8 of the manual. What’s provided with the radio is required but you do have to contact your cell phone provider to obtain a USB charging cable. I got mine the next day from Verizon. When you get your USB charging cable from your cell phone provider you may notice it has one end that connects to your phone and the other end a USB connector. This is where I got stumped for at least 20 minutes. I had no idea that there was such a thing as male and female USB adapters that slide right into each other. My parents never told me. I have now fully charged my cell phone 3 times and couldn't be happier. This radio rocks and I expect to have it forever.

I love this radio. With a few cranks of the Dynamo I can listen for an hour or more. Then there is the solar panel too. Good Weather reception.
Multiple ways to power the radio.
Don't wear out more batteries while preparing for any disaster. Crank or solar power always works.

I bought this little jewel because I need some way to charge my phone in remote places. Both the AM and FM has above average reception, and from the desert I am able to pick up some of my favorite Los Angeles stations day and night, which I can't do with the other radios in my house. With the 3 aa batteries I can play this guy for several days nearly all day long. With the wind up charge it takes a good while to build up a nice charge, but I tried letting it fully discharge and then I cranked it hard to see if it would charge my phone. It made it possible to make a call once I wound it up for 10 minutes, so hopefully you have several folks who can help you hand crank this guy for even longer to insure a good charge. Weather station and flashlight works too, and I even hiked 5 miles with the radio inside my backpack playing the whole time. Overall a fantastic radio.
Size, price, reception, power source, one of the best little radios ever invented...period.
no stereo speakers, no meter to determine battery life, must hand crank for 80 minutes to get a max charge.

Very handy in living situations like off the grid, and travelling. I can always count on my Observer to get me through coast2coast every night. Makes an affordable gift for wedding presents or housewarming or when you don't know what to get for somebody who has everything!
reliable,easy to use,batteries last a long time,emergency flashlight
The wind up is mediocre to poor time wise but OK in a pinch.
Off grid, camping, travelling,AM is great, handy, long life line (2 in 10 years)

This is a good radio except for this problem -wish I could solve it.
I have 3 of these radios and the same problem has happed in all of them.,When it dial the belt inside gets stuck and you can't move the dial to the other end -sometimes you can if you play with it.,.
I like to take them with me when I work in the garden and they are easy to charge -the dial problem happened after about 2 yrs. Other than that what you can dial to sounds great.
I have used them when the electricity goes off and when I work outside.

I got this Radio for my 84 yr old dad for Fathers day. He loved it right off. we started it up and to my dismay the tuner stuck part way threw to dial. I sent an email to CC telling them what it did not expecting much. But they were right on it. within 4 days they sent me a new radio and postage to return the defective one. Great service. as far as the radio its self goes it works as expected. Thanks CC. you have earned a loyal customer.

I have owned one for over a year now. I use it daily. It works forever on the three batteries. Much longer than any other radio I have owned. The solar charger works well and the crank would be sufficient in an emergency. I have purchased the top of the line portable radios from you over the past many years. I used to travel a lot for many years. The radio was my main source of entertainment in the motels and hotels. This radio is small enough, light weight, and tunes in the good stations (AM & FM) very clearly. Which makes it easy to find the best stations. The other super radios tune in every station imaginable. I do not have to work to determine the true signaled good stations with this radio. The ear plug works very well, as well as the light. I bought two more for my childrens families to have and use in an emergency and/or for pleasure. I highly recommend this radio for anyone and everyone to have and use. Other than for short
