3rd time NOT the charm
Have been SO satisfied with this device over many years that I recently ordered my 3rd one. Unfortunately, the range of the new one is so limited that I immediately decided to stick with the old one (fraying wires and all) ... maybe I just got a lemon.

Broadcasting a small local station across my naberhood
listening to music when I am outside
This thing is fantastic. Before I put the money down I thought that it would not go any farther than say 10 foot or so. I start playing with it and I find it goes about 100 foot or so without any extra antenna, I also found that if you use a power strip and turn off the strip for about 5 seconds and then power it back up you get more gain rather than plugging it into a wall or something. This thing has great audio, it lets me play my music clear across my small naberhood and I can play whatever I want and be almost anywhere within a 100 foot radius and I am quite happy. If anyone comes to New Florence Pa you'll find a large variety of music on 99.5Mhz. As a blind person I found it quite easy to read even without any sighted help, it lets me do whatever I want. I love it. Thank you Bob Crane and the wonderful folks over at CCrane.

Good investment
This is such a good investment. I do not or do I want Wi-Fi, I want to be able to listen to internet radio shows or music but not be tied to my computer. Now I can listen to show throughout my house. Good sound quality and also very easy to use. Best thing I have bought this year.

Best Uses
Use your imagination.
Just ordered my 2nd FM transmitter from C.Crane. I purchased the 1st one several years ago and use it to watch TV in bed with the sound muted and a pocket sized radio with earbuds so I wouldn't disturb my wife. Now I use the FM feature on my android phone. Then realized I could listen to audiobooks broadcast to a waterproof radio in the shower. As I'm getting older I find myself staying up later. The 2nd transmitter is to listen to TV in the living room after she goes to bed. Somehow the shoot 'em ups tend to get loud. I've also used it to broadcast music to several radios throughout the house while we were entertaining.

Excellent Performing FM Transmitter
Compact size
Integrated antenna
Built-in overmodulation protection
Retains last used frequency
Excludes 88.1 and 107.9 frequencies
Best Uses
Transmitting audio from portable music players or computer to FM dial for enjoyment around your listening area.
I had the pleasure to author a review of this product in 2011 on and both the product and C. Crane's customer service are top notch. Aside from one small problem this transmitter has been performing without missing a beat as far as sound quality and signal coverage goes.

Better than expected...
I bought the transmitter to broadcast SF Giants games to my garage, where using AM radios is a problem due to fluorescent light interference with AM. I broadcast off the Internet MLB audio source. Works great. I also use it a lot when out in the yard gardening, landscaping, bbqing, etc. I broadcast Internet music sources. Recently we had Cajun night on the patio - fun! My broadcast range is about 300 feet with the transmitter sitting on the kitchen table. There are recommendations to increase the range, but it hasn't been necessary for me. I did make the adjustment as described on the Internet. Note that the FM 2 model is a counter clockwise adjustment FM1 is clockwise. With a little caution it is an easy job.

I love radio and I own two FM transmitters! One is on my desktop and one is on my WiFi radio. I can tune my FM radio between two internet stations. And then turn to my favorite local stations anytime too. But one word to the wise. In order to get the full range for the entire house from the transmitter, ask Bob Crane what you need to do. It is a simple task with a screwdriver. They are set out of the box for only a short distance.

Simply the best!
Ive tried many FM transmitters but this one beets them all. Comes with an AC adapter if you need it for home or runs for a LONG time on 2) AA batts. When it says Broadcast Audio they really mean it! So why are you still reading? Go buy one! Paul in Pahrump.

My first one finally pooped out after 15 years of use.
I own two transmitters and the first one has finally died after 15 years of almost 24hr a day use. I think the storm last night got it. When I first purchased this, I wrote a review about it because I was so impressed. We could hear our radio broadcast for more than two blocks away and clear as a bell. It would even broadcast through our metal garage about 500 away. My second is working great so Im off to purchase a third now and will review that one also. Just another note, my son purchased one and could not get it working correctly, however, I believe it was due to the construction of his home. He has always had trouble with his wifi signal. I think some units work better than others but have no clue as to why. I did see an article on how to increase the range but Im sure it would void the warranty. I still am a happy customer though.

It helps to experiment
The 1st day I received the FM2 I was not sure it was going to work. I placed it in many places in the room, finding a spot on a ledge of a high window. I tested 5 plugin radios and 3 portables. Each radio had different reception caracteristics. I found I could listen to reception in an outside garage, backyard, bedrooom, office, and bathroom all at once. How much more happy can I be? Maybe an adjustable pot, so my friend next door can hear all the programs I can now listen to from my Tablet on the Internet. Now I am waiting for c crane to offer an broadcast HD internet capable clock radio.

Why no FM2 USB Power Cable?
The FM2 works very well and was very easy to set up. But Id like to get rid of the AC adapter clutter w/o using batteries. My audio source is the earphone jack on my PC. Im using it to listen to Internet Radio all over the house. Its much better than Denons Internet Radio that is unreliable and subject to server dropouts all the time in the evening. Denon wont admit the problem! My power strip is already full. So its AA batteries unless I can find a USB power cable that works with the FM2. The FM2 manuals printed specs are wrong. Per C. Crane Customer Service, the plug on the AC adapter is 5.5mm OD /2.1mm ID with NEG center pin. Amazon does not specify center pin polarity for the cables they sell and thus causes a lot of confusion. From reading all of the cable reviews it appears that all of the Amazon cables are center POS. I would give the FM2 five stars if it came with a mating USB power cable like the Whole House 3 does, but for $50 more!

I bought this so I could listen to the Olympics while working in my shop wearing ear protection with AM/FM radio capability. The website listed several vacant FM radio stations and other great and good stations on which to listen to the FM broadcast for my zip code. Clearly they did not take in consideration that it is near the Canadian Border. The vacant stations are not vacant and I have been unable to find a station that was clear enough that I could get more than 30' away and still get good reception. Very disappointed.

Version 2 is so much more efficient than the version 1 that I have owned for several year and loved. Being hard of hearing, I use the transmitter to send the TV audio to my CC Packet Radio so I can set my sound levels and my wife can adjust the TV sound to her own excellent hearing comfort (or mute the TV altogether and let me alone listen. First Version 2 I got failed after a little more than 24 hours of operation, but the second has been excellent for the past 10 months. Love it... can hear the TV audio anywhere in the house and in most of the back yard (Much greater range than the first version)... crystal clear. Recommend.

ABSOLUTELY DISAPPOINTED!!!! Not impressed at all with this the $17 competitors product that is now selling on sites for over $100 if you can even find one is way better! Range on transmitter is less than 10ft,power is horrible. Even on a clear channel other stations over power it. I am really un happy because usually ccrane stuff is superb, not this one! The other transmitter I have made by some other company is 1000% better. I've had it for 2years now and I was on a trip earlier this year and was traveling in a 2 car caravan and could pick up broadcast from lead car about 500 yards away! Too bad I can't get another one of these but they are sold out everywhere!

Sound quality very good, in fact as good as the commercial stations with low background noise and can get to the volume of other FM stations with a very minimum of distortion. Understand from another review on a part 15 forum site that this has some compression which is a good feature! While this needs 2 mods to make it into a "real transmitter" it doesn't work like my 1 watt transmitter does, but for something portable that can work on batteries it's a great transmitter! Gave a 4 out of 5 because of mods needed to make it better. The mods allow me, in Canada to take full advantage of the higher signal strength allowed here.Mark

Very nice, I am very impressed. Sounds great and well designed, and I'm a pretty picky guy when it comes to audio gadgets.I tune all my radios in the house to the FM2 which is plugged into my iPad. Podcasts, music, audio books, whatever I want to listen to as I move around the house.

Works well. I like to use it to broadcast internet-based broadcasts from my computer to radios throughout my house. If you live in a large city, it might be hard to find vacant FM frequencies without bleed-through, but works well for me.

  • How far will the FM Transmitter 2 transmit?

The range will vary depending on several factors:

    • The number of FM Stations in your area (see search tool below)
    • The quality of the FM receiver and antenna
    • The number of walls the signal needs to travel through
    • The types of walls (wood, metal, sheet rock, stucco, etc.)

The output power of the FM Transmitter 2 is set to the maximum limit specified by the FCC. Most of our customers achieve 40 - 60 feet depending on their situation. The signal will travel up to 70' under good conditions. The FM Transmitter-2 will work better in a noise free environment. In a noisy environment (such as one with lots of FM and computer noise) you can expect less range. We recommend extending the FM transmitter-2 input cable away from the computer (or any other RF noisy device) when connected.

In open environments with minimal radio noise, the range of an FM transmitter can be easily increased by attaching a length of wire to the telescoping whip antenna of the FM transmitter. In our experiment, we attached a 31-inch length of wire to the whip antenna of an FM transmitter using an alligator clip (Any wire will work. Any clip that secures the wire to the transmitter's antenna will work).

We attached the other end of the wire to a PVC pipe to keep the wire vertically oriented. We could have used a regular thumb tack, a stationery clip, or just about anything to pin the end of the wire up vertically.

As the end user, you can search the internet on ways to increase the range for many electronic devices. If you are are having range problems, feel free to Contact Us.

  • What is the Broadcast Power for the FM Transmitter 2?

250 µV @ 3 meters. It is the maximum allowed by the FCC.

  • Is the FM Transmitter 2 legal?

Yes. It is certified by the FCC.

  • Does the FM Transmitter 2 broadcast in FM stereo?

Yes, if you are transmitting from a stereo device.

  • Can I use the FM Transmitter 2 to transmit directly off a microphone?

Yes, but it must be a self-powered microphone (one that uses a battery to power the mic).

  • Can I use rechargeable batteries in my FM Transmitter 2?

Any batteries can be used but transmitting range may not be as far because rechargeable batteries are generally lower voltage.

  • How long will a fresh set of AA Alkaline batteries power the FM Transmitter 2?

A set of AA Alkaline batteries rated at 2500 mAh would provide roughly 110 hours of runtime.

  • How long is the AC adapter cord for the FM Transmitter 2?

The cord is 6 feet long.

  • Does the C. Crane FM Transmitter 2 use a Phase Lock Loop (PLL) circuit?

  • What is a Phase Lock Loop (PLL) circuit?

A Phase Lock Loop is a circuit that locks onto the frequency selected and keeps the signal from jumping to other frequencies.

  • Will the FM Transmitter 2 turn back on automatically after a power outage?

If you are using the AC power adapter with the FM Transmitter 2 and have batteries inside (that are good), the loss of power (such as a power outage) and gain of power will not shut the unit off.

  • Is the audio input on the transmitter analog or digital?

The audio input is analog which is used by most radios, televisions, computers, smartphones, and other electronics. Some newer televisions and stereo systems use digital audio outputs. Digital output would not be compatible but there are adapters (available elsewhere) that can convert the digital signals to analog.
