Midland Base Camp Radio |
The Midland XT511 Base Camp Radio is a 22 channel 2-way radio that can be used to communicate with any other FRS or GMRS type of walkie-talkies. It has the ability to encode your chosen frequency with one of 121 CTCSS/DCS codes. By selecting one of these codes you will only hear those other stations that you want to hear and not be interrupted by other users on the same channel. This makes it a very versatile radio to be used both during emergency situations and for camping and other outdoor activities. By turning off the codes, you will be able to you to keep in touch with your neighborhood disaster center and other neighbors during an emergency and be assured that you will receive all important calls. Keep in touch with those around you. The Base Camp Radio provides for hands-free operation using one of several optional headsets that are available. This makes this radio ideal for hiking, biking, or other outdoor activities. We put this radio to a realistic test and found that they could effectively communicate over one-half mile on FRS frequencies under less than ideal urban terrain. Your mileage may vary depending on conditions and could be up to 20 miles under ideal line of sight conditions on GMRS frequencies. You won't be left unaware of important weather notices with the Base Camp Radio. It is a NOAA Weather Radio as well, which allows you to keep informed of weather reports for your area directly from NOAA. It also provides a Weather Alert function which, when enabled, will alert you to all important weather broadcasts that will be affecting your area. The Base Camp Radio has a very easy to use menu system that allows you to turn on or off the many features that are included, making this radio easy to use right out of the box. The Base Camp Radio can be powered by its built-in hand crank to charge its internal NiMH battery pack or by using 4 "AA" batteries. It also comes equipped with its own AC/DC charging unit to charge the internal NiMH battery pack. Finally, the XT511 Base Camp Radio is a standard broadcast AM/FM receiver providing good sensitivity for the entire AM and FM band. The XT511 Base Camp Radio will keep you informed, entertained and in contact with those around you in both times of play and emergency. This new Midland is an exceptional radio for the money. Headphone jack could stand improvement, when plugged into has to be manipulated to get stereo if seated fully into the jack of the radio component or the hand set will only give mono sound output.

I use this with my daughter when she goes for walks in the woods here. And when she goes babysitting a 1/4 mile away, better than the phone. We also bought walkie-talkies to go with the base station, fantastic!

I have had mine for about 6 months now. I still have the first set of alkaline batteries in it, I use the rechargeable battery pack all the time and the alkalines when only I need to recharge the battery pack. I must say, the two-way reception is awesome, I use the scanning feature to pick up on others talking here in the city. The flashlight feature is somewhat annoying when you turn the unit on it flashes on for a second, but the flashlight is a welcomed idea on any portable radio. Maybe with the small LEDs they make these days it will be a common feature on most handheld radios in the future. I carry mine with me to work every day, and listen to it on occasion, I take it home and listen to it at night, AM, FM or the Weather band, it’s all right there. The options to charge it are plenty, the hand crank doesn’t take forever, the wall charger is handy at home and the car cord is on my dash in my truck all the time. I have enjoyed the options that came with this unit immensely, it is a bit pricey, but I do not regret buying it one bit. It’s still my ''take anywhere'' item. And the newness has not worn off as of yet. I am looking forward to long time use from this Midland Product for years to come. And I am glad you at C Crane Co. still carry this product. You sell products you test, you sell products you believe in and that’s about the best any company can do, sell the good stuff... it’s an awesome product, I wouldn’t be without it anywhere I go today...
