ACOUSTIC ENERGY WiFi INTERNET RADIO
How do I add a station to my WiFi Radio?
| |
Use the Add-A-Station tool available at the manufacturer's Web site.
How do I assign presets into the WiFi Radio?
| |
To assign presets first choose a station that you wish to preset. After the station has been selected and the station is playing press and hold a preset button for 8 seconds. The display will confirm that a station has been preset to the desired number button. To assign a station to presets 6-10 you must first press the SHIFT key a single time before pressing and holding the preset of desire. When you press the SHIFT key a small ARROW will appear in the lower-left corner of the display.
Why does my radio constantly buffer or stop playing when listening to a radio station?
| |
Constant buffering or a loss of the audio stream usually means that your wireless network is not working properly. Strong interference from a neighbor's WiFi signal, a microwave oven, electronics, or a cordless phone can sometimes distort the connection between your wireless router and the WiFi radio causing a deficit of consistent signal. In this case the radio will need to buffer in order to catch up to the playable stream. Another less likely cause for buffering takes place when the Internet radio station is unreliable or has gaps in the audio stream. Make sure your WiFi antenna or router is up off the ground and not obstructed by physical objects.
Another tip is to try a reliable station, like BBC Radio 1 for a few hours to see if it has the same problems with buffering. If the radio works well on BBC Radio 1 then the problem is not with the wifi radio or reception between it and the router but lies with the station. Reciva copies one of the stations streaming URL addresses and uses it for their database. When too many people are using the same URL then it gets overloaded and causes buffering on the radio. Reciva may be able to add an alternative stream to be used. Contact Reciva with station problems by email using support@reciva.com.
Where can I find my router name (ESSID) and wireless encryption key?
| |
Try looking on the underside of your wireless router or wireless modem. Sometimes they are printed on a label affixed to the bottom. Also check your documents for a piece of paper that was printed out after the router was initially set up.
How do I reset the WiFi Radio back to factory defaults?
| |
Depress the BACK key several times until you get to the top menu which should give you one of the following three choices: CONFIGURE, STATIONS, or MEDIA PLAYER. Choose CONFIGURE by turning the knob and pressing SELECT. Turn the knob again until FACTORY RESET is displayed and then press SELECT again. The Display will now say FACTORY RESET COMPLETE. You must wait for the radio to restart before the reset is indeed complete.
How do I upgrade my firmware?
| |
Before you begin upgrading your AE WiFi Radio, please click on the link below and review the Flow Chart of your radio's menus. http://www.ccrane.com/instruction-manuals/acoustic-energy-wi-fi-internet-radio-flow-chart.pdf To upgrade firmware: 1. Turn on Radio. 2. Select CONFIGURE 3. Turn the knob to UPGRADE FIRMWARE and press SELECT 4. Turn the knob to YES and press SELECT. It will take between 5-15 minutes to upgrade your radio's firmware. DO NOT turn off the radio during this process as doing so may render the radio inoperable. Please leave the radio "upgrading" (the blue screen will freeze with "Upgrading Firmware" or go blank) until normal operating functions appear. After your radio has completed the firmware upgrade, it will operate effectively as "new" so you will have to rescan for your network and enter any encryption key required. If you find your radio reverting back to the original firmware version (v198) rather than upgrading to the new one (v257-a-181), please email - info@acoustic-energy.co.uk with the serial numbers from the bottom of your radio and the Serial Number displayed on your radio. To find your WiFi Radio's serial number, go to <Configure> and press Select, then go to <Version> and press Select, and then go to <Serial Number> and press Select. If you have any trouble, please let us know and we will strive to make your radio able to receive the new firmware as soon as we can.
When I do a Factory Reset does that wipe the new firmware?
Why do I get a crackling sound from my speakers when volume is set to low or when headphones are connected?
| |
These sounds are being caused by the radios circuitry receiving digital noise from the wireless router or access point. So far there is no definitive cure.
At night I can see a green flashing light inside my radio through the speaker grill. Is this normal?
| |
Yes this is normal, the flashing light is a green LED that is attached to an internal component.
How can I switch from AM to PM on the clock?
| |
You cannot, the clock only displays in 24-hour mode. Though future firmware upgrades may enable a 12-hour mode.
Will sites that require user authentication (free or not) play on the Wi-Fi radio?
| |
If the site requires authentication, such as "click the yes button", it will not play on the radio.
Can I use the WiFi Radio to listen to a radio stream that is playing on my computer?
| |
No, but you can get the same stream to play on the WiFi Radio. Though you must have the firmware upgrade for this to work. After upgrading your firmware you will be able to create a My Stuff folder on your radio that contains a list of Audio Streams selected by you. In order to add streams to your "My Stuff" folder, you must set up an account through the Reciva Web site.
To set up your account now, click on the following link https://www.reciva.com/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=85. Before trying to add your own stream to your Reciva account, we recommend searching for the radio station in Recivas listing of over 5000 available stations.
Once your account is created and you are logged in, click on the MY ACCOUNT tab at the top of the Reciva web site and log in.
Next click MY RADIOS and enter the electronic serial number and register key from your radios menu.
1. After your radio is added to your account, select the MY ACCOUNT tab again. 2. Next select MY STREAMS and enter in a name and the URL of a stream you want to hear. (For example, in order to enter the URL for the audio stream of ?????.com - you would go to their Web site and copy the link that opens the stream: http://???.????.??? - and paste that URL into the appropriate box on your Reciva My Streams section). Please note that sometimes finding the correct URL for a stream can be tricky - there's a full description of what's involved at: https://www.reciva.com/index.php?option=com_kb&page=articles&articleid=4&Itemid=104. 3. Once the stream is added to your Reciva account you should be able to play it on your WIFI radio. 4. To listen to your streams, unplug the power from your WIFI radio and then reconnect it. 5. When the radio boots back up select STATIONS. 6. Next select MY STUFF and then MY STREAMS and dial in your stream.
The stream should play if it is in a compatible format.

How do I play stored audio from my computer?
| |
As long as your WiFi radio is on the same wireless network as your computer, there are two ways to use your WiFi radio to play audio files stored on your computer: File Sharing and Universal Plug & Play. 1. To Share a Folder Using Simple File Sharing Create the folder you want to share. I like to create shared folders either in My Documents or on the desktop to keep them from hiding. Rightclick the folder and then click Sharing and Security. The Sharing tab of the Properties dialog box for the folder opens. Click the Share this folder on the network check box. This makes the folder visible on the network. Once the folder is shared on your computer, go to your radio and select MEDIA PLAYER and then SCAN FOR PC. You should be able to connect to your computer and start playing your audio if everything is configured properly.
Note: you may need to configure your PC's firewall settings for media file sharing to work. 2: The next way to use the WiFi Radio to access audio files on your computer is through Universal Plug & Play (UPNP) Download Windows Media Player 11 (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/11/default.aspx) and install the Media Player on your computer. Open Media Player 11 and select the LIBRARY tabs down arrow. Select MEDIA SHARING. Check the box titled Share My Media and click OK Another Window will open keep this window open. Go to your WIFI Radio and select MEDIA PLAYER Next select UPNP SERVERS. The radio will scan for UPNP servers at this time your computer will ask you if you want to allow the radio to share files. Click ALLOW. Using the radio; scan again for UPNP servers. You should be able to access your audio from the radio.

At the Reciva.com Web site, what is the difference between My Stations and My Streams?
| |
"My Stations" provides you a menu listing of your favorite stations chosen from the list available at Reciva.com. "My Streams" is a folder you can use to store the URLs of audio streams you find online that are not already included in the list of stations available through Reciva.com. While you can add stations and streams to your Reciva.com account online, in order to access these folders through your AE Internet Radio you have to have the most recent firmware upgrade. After you have upgraded your firmware, your AE Internet Radio will have two folders called "My Stations" and "My Streams."

Will the Acoustic Energy Wi-Fi Internet Radio work with my "N" type router?
| |
The Wi-Fi Radio will not work with N type routers unless you change the broadcast mode on your router from the N setting to the B or G setting.
When I start up my Acoustic Energy WiFi Radio I always get the message No Network Device Found. I can't do anything else after this because it displays when the radio is starting up. How can I resolve this?
| |
It seems that the internal WiFi card in your radio is not responding and may be defective. Please contact the retailer from whom you purchased the radio for warranty information. Please also do not confuse this error message with No Networks Found after scanning for networks. (Unedited)
My favorite station on my WiFi radio no longer works but I can listen to it on my computer, why?
| |
It could be one of two reasons:
1) Most likely the website for the station has changed the URL for the stream. This has an unintentional affect on the connectivity of WiFi radio users. Computers are not affected because their players get the stream directly from the website which is automatically updated. The WiFi radio gets the stream from Reciva who has the URL stored in their data base that can be sometimes outdated when changes to the website have been made. This can be resolved by emailing support@reciva.com and requesting the URL to be updated.
2) Recently several radio stations (mostly in the United States) have gone to using Shockwave Flash-embedded players. These players do not use a standard streaming protocol and block external audio players. Many of these embedded players use an algorithm to change the URL of their stream dynamically from once a month to once an hour. The goal of these players is to force you to go to the stations website to view advertisements that supplement the stations income. At this time there is no permanent work-around for this. Reciva is aware and working on a solution and in the meantime trying to obtain dedicated streams from the individual radio stations who own them.

What are the specs on the AC adapter?
| |
DVE Switching Adapter Output +7.5 1.3a, Input 100-240V 50/60Hz 0.3A. Model: DSA-10P-07 075098.
Does the the Acoustic Energy WiFi Internet Radio have a port for an external WiFi antenna?
| |
No. It does not. The best way to strengthen the signal to your WiFi Radio may be to boost the signal at your modem or router. You can do so by adding a better antenna to your modem or router.
I have a new URL that I want to add to the Reciva station list. Is there a way to test the URL to see if it will work well?
| |
Yes, send an e-mail to streamtest@reciva.com. For the subject of the email insert the station name. In the body of the email insert just the URL. After sending the email the stream tester performs the test and replies to you with the result.

When I enter my encryption key into the radio an error message appears and the radio does not connect. What am I doing wrong?
| |
1) Check and make sure that your router is configured to Enable DHCP mode (You may need to contact the maker of you router for technical assistance). 2) Be sure that your router is not configured to 802.11n, 80211a, WPA2 encryption, Shared Key, or AES. 3) Strong wireless interference may be disrupting your wireless signal. Try changing the broadcast channel on your router. 4) Be sure that you enter the correct wireless encryption password stated in the wireless settings of your router into your radio. 5) Contact your systems administrator or router maker/provider and explain the situation. 6) Try resetting the radio back to factory defaults (explained in FAQ's). 7) Make sure that your radio is receiving a signal from your WiFi network.

I am having trouble upgrading my firmware. It tries to upgrade but upon restart it still shows that I have the old version. What should I do next?
| |
You will need to email two serial numbers to info@acoustic-energy.co.uk. The first serial number is found on the bottom of your radio and starts with IR... You can find the second serial number by navigating to the <Configure>, <Version>, <Serial Number> menus. After emailing both of the numbers you should wait 1-3 days before attempting to upgrade again. It will take between 5-15 minutes to get the new firmware upgraded. DO NOT turn off the radio during this process as doing so may render the radio inoperable. After the upgrade is complete the radio will restart and you will need to reconnect to your Wi-Fi network. In order to get your newest station listing, you may have to unplug the radio and force a Station List update.
How do I know if my WiFi radio has upgraded?
| |
After the radio upgrades you should have new features available such as a MY STUFF folder. To see if MY STUFF is installed, press the BACK button until you see STATIONS. Select STATIONS - if you have the updates you'll have three options: LOCATION, GENRE, and MY STUFF. If you do not have the update, you will only have LOCATION and GENRE options. Alternatively, you can also check the SERVICE PACK number under your CONFIGURE setting. To find the SERVICE PACK number, press BACK until you see the option for STATIONS, and then turn the dial to CONFIGURE, and press SELECT. Now dial in the SERVICE PACK. The upgraded firmware is v255-c-084, v255-c-105, or v255-c-106. If you see v195 or v198, you do not have the firmware update.
I have the upgrade, now how do I add stations and streams to the MY STUFF folder?
| |
If you haven't already done so, go to www.reciva.com and register your radio. After you login to your Reciva account (which is free), click on the MY ACCOUNT tab. Click on MY STATIONS to add your favorite stations to your MY STATIONS folder, or click MY STREAMS to add streams of your choice to your MY STREAMS folder. The next time you update your stations list on your WiFi Radio, you can access your MY STATIONS and MY STREAMS folders by selecting the STATIONS folder on your display. NOTE: By adding stations to your MY STATIONS folder (which is very to do easy using the online tool) you can easily access more stations than those saved in your ten presets.

Sometimes while I am listening to KGO and certain other stations all sound is gone, yet I do not see buffering displayed on the LCD.
| |
As with many US-based radio stations, KGO does not broadcast their on-air advertisement over Internet streams. While the advertisements are on, your radio will be silent. Once the advertisements end and the program continues, you will continue to hear the stream.

I am having trouble connecting my radio to my wireless router. What should I do?
| |
1: Make sure you radio is at least 10 feet away from your router. 2: Be sure your router is upgraded to the latest firmware. 3: The AE Wi-Fi Radio is not compatible with wireless N routers. Most wireless N routers can be switched to broadcast wireless G or B, which will work with Wi-Fi Radio. 4: If the radio does not connect to your router when wireless encryption is enabled do the following: a. Disabled wireless encryption on the router. Call your router's manufacturer for more details on how to proceed. b. Next, on the AE Wi-Fi Radio, scan for your network and connect. c. Once connected, turn the Tuning Knob to <Configure> and press the Select Button. d. Turn the Tuning Knob until <Upgrade Firmware> is displayed: then press the Select Button. e. "Are you sure? Yes or No" will be displayed. Turn the Tuning Knob to Yes then press the Select Button. The firmware should take about 5 minutes to download. The radio will restart automatically after the firmware upgrades. f. Enable wireless encryption on router (optional). g. Finally, scan for networks on the radio, select your network, and enter your encryption key.
I was getting 6 bars of signal strength prior to upgrading my firmware, now I am only getting 4. Did upgrading the firmware hurt my signal?
| |
No, the default firmware measures signal strength on a scale of 6, the new firmware measures on a scale of 4.
I am trying to listen to a station on the Wi-Fi Radio but the station will not connect. The router seems to be working and I can get the station on my computer.
| |
1. Unplug the radio (from the back of the radio) and plug it back in. After the radio restarts, try the station again. This will often fix most problems. 2. If step one does not work, try another popular station (like BBC-4) to see if any stations are working on the radio. If one station works but the other does not this means that either the station is having problems or they have changed their streaming link on the web and the radio is still trying to use the older (now invalid) streaming link. In this case contact Reciva and have them update the station link on the radio. Once Reciva updates the link, you will be able to access the station after you restart your radio.
I turned my radio off and then a few minutes to a few hours later it came on by itself. It was not the designated alarm time. Why is this happening?
| |
This radio does not truly shut off when the power button is pressed. Instead it goes into a standby mode. This makes the radio susceptible to power surges. A small power surge is all it would take to knock the radio out of standby mode. To minimize the chance of this happening and damaging the radio, we recommend you plug the radio into a surge protector.
My AE Wi-Fi Internet Radio will play for a couple hours then the display will scramble and become unreadable. If I unplug it and plug it back in it will unscramble but only for a short time.
| |
Once in a while this can happen on units with the original firmware. Once you upgrade the firmware you should never encounter this issue again. For instructions on how to upgrade your firmware, please see the question, "How do I upgrade my firmware?" under the FAQ section.
My Wi-Fi Internet radio does not seem to be receiving a signal. The display says "No network device found."
| |
Go to your <Configure> menu and then select <Factory Reset>. The factory reset option clears user data such as stored network name, stored WEP codes and preset stations. Once this reset is complete, attempt to scan and connect to your Wireless network as normal. You will have to reenter your network key. If your Wi-Fi network is not working (for instance, you do not have a Wi-Fi connection on your computer), you may also have to reset your router by turning it off and on.
My AE Wi-Fi Radio worked fine for a long time but one day it stopped working completely. When I power it ON the screen wont get past Initializing Network. What could be wrong?
| |
Wireless N technology is the new latest and greatest technology built into most modern WiFi Routers. When the AE WiFi Radio is within about 150ft of an N router, it malfunctions and will not get past Initializing Network. So even if you do not have an N router, your neighbor might have one that renders yours radio useless.
If this sounds like the problem you are having then call C. Crane for more assistance. We are currently working on an affordable upgrade to fix this problem.

| As an avid listener of world band radio, I had missed it
upon my move to a downtown section of a large metropolitan area six years ago. The internet offered me the next best
access to the radio waves with consistent sound quality. I just received the new AE Wi-Fi Internet Radio. It’s
a gem. The set up was painless and quite intuitive. In five minutes the unit had found my wireless access, registered
itself, downloaded updates and was programmed for 10 presets. I had originally used the Philips Streamium which was one
of the first of such products widely available. Upon its release it was quite an advance. However many of its services
required fees to enjoy the full menu of stations and sound quality. Set up was tedious and required much data entry.
The AE is compact, has great sound and plays multiple media types. In the past, the only way I could stream certain
stations was to use my conventional computer. The AE is much simpler and receives all of the stations
I prefer to listen to. C. Crane’s ordering and delivery was smooth and efficient.
You attention to detail actually uncovered a phone number update required for my credit card company. Thank you for
the careful attention to verification of my account. - Mark C. Atlanta, GA |
| Just a note of thanks: I recently purchased a Acoustic
Energy Wi-Fi Internet Radio, and I couldn't be happier. This is the one plug and play device that lives up to it's
name: I had it out of the box and was listening to it within five minutes. And the listening experience? I haven't been
this excited about a radio since I purchased my first shortwave receiver while in elementary school. A breakthrough in technology
and ergonomics! Well Done! - Greg S Sacramento, CA |
| Got your AE Wi-Fi Radio last Thursday; played as soon as
I plugged it in. I'm in Georgia and listen to KNX in Los Angeles through the Internet. The AE Wi-Fi lets me hear
it anytime, and for its size the sound is incredibly rich. Makes me feel like I'm in L.A.!
Terrific product! - Christopher C. Cumming, GA |
| This radio is fantastic! I think it is so neat that I can
listen to any Internet stream on a radio in a room that is not even close to my computer. And no monthly fees! Also,
I am somewhat, uhm, technically-challenged, and C.Crane's Customer Service Department was so helpful. The ordering
and delivery process was very efficient. I have ordered quite a few items from C.Crane and the quality and service
has been excellent.
- Bobbie H. Scottsdale, AZ |
| First of all, thanks for your participation in the 20th SWL Winterfest @ Kulpsville, PA. I was the lucky winner
of the AE Wi-Fi Internet Radio, and I think I won the best prize.
Having been a shortwave listener since the 1960s, I've been disappointed in the trend of international broadcasters
leaving shortwave, especially English broadcasts. This dedicated computer brings them all back, in much greater fidelity
with nearly total reliability, something shortwave never had. It's also far more convenient and easy to use than
a conventional computer. Even my wife, who never liked shortwave, enjoys listening to Aloha Joe from Hawaii. - Bruce S Cary, NC |

| Listen: I hesitated before spending $300. on a radio too but having dealt with the C. Crane company before, I knew
that if the Acoustic Energy radio was not what I expected I was safe, so I ordered one. Friends: If you are a talk
radio (or any other radio) aficionado, as I am, you've just hit the Mother Load.
This radio changes everything. No longer are you at the mercy of your local station's program director who might,
at any time, get the bright idea that Friday night "infomercials" can bring in more revenue than the advertising dollars brought
in by regular programming can. No more will you worry that your favorite talk station might be broadcasting Mariachi
Music 24/7 at some point in the future. Wish you could get the Rollye James show in the New York City market but can't
quite pull in the Albany station that carries her show clearly enough to make it worth listening to? Simply catch Rollye
out of Columbia, South Carolina as I do, clear as a bell. Going to be away from home for awhile and wish you could
bring your local stations with you? Well, if your hotel has open WiFi, you can. This radio weighs next to nothing.
Wondering what talk radio is like in Cape Town, South Africa? So? Turn it on and check it out!
Afraid you'll have difficulty setting the radio up? Hey! I went through college before the hand held calculator was
invented and set up for this radio took less than ten minutes. It only took that long because I thought it best to update
the software (push the "Update now" button) before getting started. Not as smart as I am? Call C. Crane. Whoever
answers the phone will help you :-) I'm not going to buy four more of these radios yet as the
technology is new and years from now, who knows? Maybe they'll cost less in the distant future, but one day I will have
one of these in every room keeping a good "old time" radio in the closet in case the network goes down.
I sure wish I could set up a rolling network in my car! One day............. - Carl Nassau County, NY |
| I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy the Acoustic Energy Wi-Fi Radio. I am an avid
talk radio listener and have four CCRadios so I can listen wherever I am, inside and outside. The Wi-Fi radio is that
extra plus for me. When my local station preempts my favorite talk radio show because of a local college game or NASCAR
race, I can listen to my favorite show out of Indiana or California. Since I received the radio two weeks ago I have had a wonderful
time listening to stations and hosts all across the USA. I haven't checked out foreign broadcasts yet, but I will in
time. I did have to spend some time on the telephone with my wireless router company to upgrade the firmware on my router,
but once that was taken care of, everything was great. Occasionally there are buffering issues as I have satellite Internet access,
but turning the radio off for a few minutes usually clears up that annoyance.
I was reluctant to spend $300 on a radio, and debated with myself for months, but finally decided to purchase this
radio. I'm so glad I did. Thank you for offering this great radio for talk radio
junkies like me. - Mary B. Elizabethton, TN |
| My son Chris gave me the AE Radio for Christmas. I am a radio addict. It has ten presets so, at the press of a button,
I can listen to WABC in New York, Jazz from Switzerland, WRKO in Boston, WSB in Atlanta, 6PR in Australia or five
other of my new "most favorite" radio stations. I use it with my wireless transmitter so I can listen all over the
house. The size is perfect and the sound is very good for such a compact unit. I plan on buying the AE speaker syster
soon. Don't get me wrong...I still love my CCRadio and my CCRadio-SWP. - Gene H Fairhope, AL |
