High Performance, mid-size portable World Band Receiver! The new Sangean ATS-909X has a long history and the new model is a winner at a fair price. There are a lot of shortwave radios available but relatively few with Single Side Band capability. The government and Ham operators transmit emergency and other communications on SSB because the radio waves travel further on less power.
The ATS-909X is an AM, FM, LW and Shortwave receiver with high quality Single Side Band reception and PLL Synthesized Digital tuning. The radio includes five tuning methods for ease of locating frequencies. Call letters of local RDS (Radio Data Systems) FM stations show in the display. The new enhanced features include 406 programmable memories instead of the 307 memories available on the previous ATS-909 version. The control interface is compatible with the DAR-101 which can do synthesized MP3 recording with the ATS-909X. The squelch control can be set to adjust the seek and find sensitivity. Sangean has enlarged the LCD screen which now includes a full LED backlight. The Aux-In jack allows for MP3 player or iPod connectivity. It has a built-in headphone amplifier which allows for manual control of the volume going to the headphones or ear buds. This radio includes an alarm clock that uses a ramp-up buzzer or wake up to a favorite station. Also includes 3 timers and an adjustable sleep timer. Built-in battery charger can recharge NiMH batteries. Operates on 4 "AA" Alkaline or rechargeable batteries (not included) or included AC Adapter. Includes carry case, ear buds, and SW antenna. One-year warranty. Weight: 1.5 lbs. Size: 8.8" W x 5.3" H x 1.5" D. |

It produces a charging current of 0.5A with delta voltage detection and temperature protection.

The charging time would vary depending on the capacity of the NiMH batteries that are used. For example, our NiMH batteries are rated at 2200mAh for capacity, which means at a charging rate of 500mA per hour it would take roughly 4 hours and 24 minutes to charge to full. Age and condition of the batteries can also modify charging times as well.

As an owner of several portable shortwave radios, this is the best radio I have owned so far. The build quality of the radio is 5 star. The interface is very intuitive and user friendly. This is the only radio I own that you can turn on and "figure" out with no user manual reading. Both the sound and tone is excellent for a radio of this size. The screen is large and the display is clear and very nice. I actually enjoy the RDS even on the worldband stations that I have pulled in. The buttons feel positive, and the knobs have an expensive feel. It has a very long telescopic antenna, and can tune both FM and Shortwave extremely well. I have also used the accessory antenna plugged in to the side of the unit. This did help to pull in some harder to dx signals. The automatic memory is a bit unusual, but nice. It saves the radio stations in order of their signal strength and RDS values. I did not think I liked this at first, but have since changed my mind. Battery time is on par, and you can buy and install NIMH batteries that will charge inside the unit if you so desire. To give a comparison, if you look at this radio vs. the Sony 7600 they are very close in performance. The USB and LSB on both units work very well. The Sony has AM Synchro, while the Sangean does not. However, the pleasant tone and sound from the speaker on the Sangean are more important to me than the AM Synchro found on the Sony. This radio is the winner in the sound category when comparing these two. All in all, if you like listening to talk radio, ham, SW and AM, you will not be disappointed in this well made solid little radio.

I have used and owned a LOT of radios, including some costing over $1000 ! This 909X is simply an outstanding radio, great reception and feature rich. Easy to use and compact in size. Far better than the famous Sony 7600GR

I have read all the reviews of the New 909X,and I have to say some are quite misleading. I don''t know if the nay sayers have under performing radios, I was told recently by a very high ranking person associated with a major radio company that after a new model is released that the mfr will quietly make engineering evaluations and upgrades based on the first field reports, and never make public the changes, so I will assume that the early reports were based on the Beta radios.
My first impression of the 909X out of the box was that the build quality was very good, with a nice feel in my hands. The first order of business was to read the English portion of the operation manual, then after installing 4 AA alkaline cells and setting the battery charge switch to the correct setting it was time to power up and "walk through" the functions. After I verified the 909X was 100% it was time to put it through its paces.
My first interest is AM MW DXing, so I tuned the 909X to 1360,and proceeded to pick up KWDJ operating with only 1000 Watts 100 miles away. At my location I am 2 miles from KOSS 1380 with 1000 watts. Picking up the signal from KWDJ 1360 100 Miles away with a measured field strength of only 400 Microvolts and with a 60 Millivolt signal only 2 channels away is quite a chore for any radio, the 909X with it''s DSP IF amp easily separated the two signals with no problems and no bleed-over.
Another challenge was on low end of the AM dial. KMJ 580 from Fresno, 200 Miles away has a measured filed strength at my location of 350 Microvolts and KAVL 610 2 Miles from me operates with 5000 Watts and has a measured Field strength of 100 Millivolts. The 909X easily picked KMJ and much to my surprise also received KTIE at 590 from San Bernardino, 100 miles away operating with 2500 Watts and with a measured signal strength of 400 Microvolts at my location!
The 909X pulled in signals from AM stations all along the dial with ease. On FM the 909X displayed excellent selectivity and sensitivity, example: KPFK 90.7 Los Angeles operates with 110,000 Watts and has a signal at my location of more than 1 Millivolt (60DBU) and KGZO 90.9 Shater, CA is over 100 miles away and has a very weak signal at my location of less than 90 Microvolts! To receive the KGZO signal in full stereo is nearly impossible, however the 909X easily received the signal, full quieted and in solid stereo!
By the way the 909X through all the tests, AM and FM used ONLY the built in FM rod antenna and built in Ferrite rod antenna with no external help whatsoever! I was also impressed by the great audio quality from the built in speaker.
Another item was battery life. The original 909 was a HOG when using battery power, however all the tests I performed used one set of 4-AA Procell Alkaline batteries and after the tests, and listening with a moderate volume, the battery indicator in the LCD display never changed! Quite an improvement over the original!
On SW the 909X copied many stations with equal sensitivity from the low to high. On SW I used my RF2200 as a standard to gauge the signals on SW. All the memories and alarms worked as advertised, the RDS was a nice bonus when listening to stations that transmitted information about the content of the programming. I am very happy with my 909X. FYI, I purchased this out my own pocket with no ties to any MFR or retailer, and no special prices or incentives to have a favorable review.
My recommendations are few, a sync detector would be nice, also a carry handle. It would nice to have the direct entry without having to hit the F key, frequency, and then enter. I did notice the keys on the touch pad required "extra" effort.
All in all looks like a winner for Sangean.

I recieved my new 909X radio. It is outstanding! Great craftmanship. Beats my old Sony 2010, which I have retired. I built a special stand and use the CCCrane mw antenna with it. I made a shorter cord and plug the control box direct into the ant. port on the radio. Works very good this way. I eleminate the ferrate bar altogether this way. Thanks again.
