High Performance, mid-size portable World Band Receiver!

The new Sangean ATS-909X has a long history and the new model is a winner at a fair price. There are a lot of shortwave radios available but relatively few with Single Side Band capability. The government and Ham operators transmit emergency and other communications on SSB because the radio waves travel further on less power.

The ATS-909X is an AM, FM, LW and Shortwave receiver with high quality Single Side Band reception and PLL Synthesized Digital tuning. The radio includes five tuning methods for ease of locating frequencies. Call letters of local RDS (Radio Data Systems) FM stations show in the display. The new enhanced features include 406 programmable memories instead of the 307 memories available on the previous ATS-909 version. The control interface is compatible with the DAR-101 which can do synthesized MP3 recording with the ATS-909X. The squelch control can be set to adjust the seek and find sensitivity.

Sangean has enlarged the LCD screen which now includes a full LED backlight. The Aux-In jack allows for MP3 player or iPod connectivity. It has a built-in headphone amplifier which allows for manual control of the volume going to the headphones or ear buds.

This radio includes an alarm clock that uses a ramp-up buzzer or wake up to a favorite station. Also includes 3 timers and an adjustable sleep timer.

Built-in battery charger can recharge NiMH batteries. Operates on 4 "AA" Alkaline or rechargeable batteries (not included) or included AC Adapter.

Have owned this receiver (ats-909 in silver) for six months now. First, the good... The fast/slow tuning function works as good as a veneer dial. The reception on the internal antenna rivals the three other high end portable receivers I own (my benchmarks). The dial light functions are nice and can also be used as a "night light" with the unit on AC. The sound quality is respectable both on music or tuning sideband thanks to the three position tone control (it works as good as an analog knob). Now, the not-so-good... The tuning control has become "sketchy" sometimes making it hard to "land" on a freq. The (forward/reverse) tuning push buttons have to be pushed "just-so" to operate (pushing at the edge/end of these long curved buttons located around the tuning dial fails to tune; I must depress the WHOLE button). The display is certainly sharp and bright enough though needs to be viewed straight-on (sometimes difficult in your lap, table or nightstand). THE SIZE... This is a compact well built receiver falling somewhere between a pocket size and table-top unit. I find it difficult to hold AND operate the functions as there are few places to grasp that aren''t festooned with controls or what may be a fragile speaker grill (where my left thumb would naturally fall). Finally, the battery life...with 2500 mAh batteries lasting eight hours at workshop volumes, I will relegate this unit to the nightstand. Mark Sommers, A happy and faithful customer since ''84.
