You
may have noticed this new acronym popping up on some of our products.
RoHS stands for Restrictions on Hazardous Substances, and it's a
directive that could have a huge impact on the production and disposal
of consumer electronics. First adopted in Europe in 2006 (and later
adopted in California in 2007), RoHS restricts the use of six dangerous
substances in lots of common electronics. According to the official
RoHS compliance Web site (www.rohs.eu),
the RoHS symbol indicates that "new electrical and electronic
equipment put on the market does not contain any of the six banned
substances: lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, poly-brominated
biphenyls (PBB) or polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), in quantities
exceeding maximum concentration values."
While some military and medical equipment is exempt from RoHS compliance,
the electronics governed by the standard are among the most common
you’ll find in your home, from radios to MP3 players to cell phones
and (increasingly) computers. In practical terms, the standard protects
factory workers at the production level, sharply reducing their
exposure to hazardous substances. The standard also has a profound
impact on the disposal and recycling of electronics, in that disposed
substances will no longer have at least six of the most hazardous
chemicals formerly found in electronics, and recycled electronics
will not expose workers to toxics as they harvest components.

This pillow speaker has saved a marriage or two ... The SoftSpeaker™ is the first pillow speaker designed not just to go under your pillow. It can sit right on your pillow, closer to your ear, so you can keep the volume where only you can hear it. To create the SoftSpeaker™, we designed a high-quality pillow speaker and encased it in soft, padded foam and put it in a teddy-bear soft cover (which is removable and washable). It's so plush you can rest your ear right on it. Plug the speaker into the headphone jack of any radio, put it on your pillow and enjoy some of the highest music and voice fidelity available in a pillow speaker. It offers the perfect combination of comfort, privacy and quality. We started distributing pillow speakers over 20 years ago and realized they break more often than one would think. So, we took up the quest to design a better, longer lasting Pillow Speaker. In developing this speaker, we also focused on the common wire break point where the cord enters the pillow speaker. Over time the oils and dirt from one’s hands and face can cause the wire (where it enters the pillow speaker) to harden and eventually break. Our design uses a high quality wire and a very flexible rubber protective outer cover to help improve the longevity. To stand behind this design, we offer a one year warranty. This is unheard of in an industry where 30 to 90 days is generally the normal warranty period for a pillow speaker. "Finally there is a pillow speaker that sounds great." -- Steve Kruschen, Mr. Gadget. Check out Steve Kruschens The Mr. Gadget Consumer Tech Guide where books are sold. We always strive to meet our customer’s needs, so in 2011, we introduced the SoftSpeaker’s sister, the SoftSpeaker-2, which has an in-line volume control so you don’t have to reach for your radio or tablet to control the volume. Features: - Frequency response: 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz.
- Speaker type: Neodymium-Ferrous-Boron (Rare Earth Magnet).
- One-year Warranty.
 | | | | Removable & Washable Cover | Conforms to Pillow Contour | Durable, High Flex Cord Restraint |
|
The impedance of the SoftSpeaker Pillow Speaker is 32 ohm.
|
Yes, the pillow speakers will work with portable CD players as long as they have a 1/8" headphone jack. You may need a stereo by mono adapter (some headphone jacks are configured a little differently), but most devices don't need this.
|
We recommend our SoftSpeaker Pillow Speaker because it has the best fidelity. If it doesnt work well under your pillow, it will also work right on top of your pillow. We made the cover soft enough to be comfortable even when you rest your ear right on it. We haven't had any complaints about any of our pillow speakers disturbing other people whether above or below the pillow.
|
No, the SoftSpeaker Pillow Speaker is in a sealed compartment.
|
Yes. Simply remove the cover from the speaker and wash.

You saved my marriage with this product. My bride has stayed with me 52 years and the last 10 or so years are due to these soft, high quality with excellent bass sound reproductions. I listen to Coast to Coast A. M. when I want to now without causing any spousal problems.

I have ordered several of these, I use it without the pillow as it lays flatter on the pillow. I wish they would make just a light cover the speaker instead of the bulky one that come with it. Otherwise I highly recommend this as the cord is strong and lasts much longer than store bought head phones. I fall asleep with my CC radio on as it shuts off automatically after 1 hour then I find I am laying on the cord when I wake.

The SoftSpeaker is excellent! Spend a few dollars more and get the model with the inline volume control. Not only is this a high quality pillow speaker, it will instantly improve the frequency response when plugged into the earphone jack of any inexpensive pocket transistor radio. One will know hear bass! Remember, it is designed as a high quality pillow speaker, not a room filling speaker. I have compared the SoftSpeaker to a national brand pillow speaker, and the SoftSpeaker runs circles around the national brand. The sound quality isn't even close. As with other C. Crane products I have purchased, it is top notch from a top notch company. Mark from New Hampshire.

Great sound. Only downside is that you need to obtain a converter to convert the 1/8 inch stereo jack to monaural. Doesn't make sense to put a stereo jack on a speaker that is monaural. They need to pay attention to detail.

This is a great speaker, but I must say about this last one I ordered... the wire broke near the speaker end 9 months after ordering it. This really should last longer. The last one I ordered was the second SoftSpeaker I ordered. The first one lasted about 2 years. Now, do I like this pillow speaker... I am back again ordering a third one, so I guess I do like it.
I also ordered last time the extension cable with a volume control. This product works great. I highly recommend you ordering it with this speaker. It blasts the volume up for those of us who are hard of hearing!

This is the second pillow speaker I have had. Both have broken in the same location after about 9 months use. This location is where the lead wire attaches to the speaker. I am considering ordering another pillow speaker. Which is best? What can I do to extend speaker use? Is the adjustable speaker less prone to failure?

See Carl and Lauryl's notes below. Pretty much says it all. Before I ordered mine I called CCrane and the rep said they have made the cord relief stronger so I ordered one. As C and L said, the sound quality is superior to the Radio Shack and similar. Thanks CCrane!!!

The speaker is great; it is just as useful without the "pillow". The strain relief at the plug end is also top notch - - no trouble yet with the wire breaking or pulling out of the plug. We had a problem with the plug, but I think it was due to customer abuse, not a faulty product. The tip of the plug broke off inside the jack, making it necessary to dismantle the radio to remove it.

Love this speaker - the sound quality is excellent. My husband and I both use them as we listen to different radio programs at night. (Me old time radio programs, him political junk!) I do agree with the other reviewers that after a time (ours usually last a about a year) the wire attached to the speaker gets brittle and breaks. Wish they lasted a little longer but...oh, well. As long as C.Crane continues to carry them, we'll be back; we can't find them anywhere else.

Excellent audio, pillow comfort, etc. Terrible cable, becomes hard over time (6 months of nightly use), eventually breaks above flex connection. I suggest that C. Crane develop a simple mini-jack connection between cable and speaker and sell replacement cables or specify a better plastic cable covering in the first place.

Great item while it worked. This speaker worked great for about a year, and then the wire that enters the speaker must have gotten broken internally and the speaker stopped working. This actually happened to two units I purchased. Believe me, I am not rough with the item or abuse it in any way, but over time the internal wire connection at the speaker end does not hold up. This would be a great item if it were only made better. I am somewhat disappointed after having the same issue with two of them.

My wife and I listen in the middle the night to radio and have gone through dozens of Radio Shack pillow speakers over the years. These have failed usually within 9-12 months because of cheap connecting cable. We have had two of the SoftSpekers (my wife and I like different programs)and one failed in about a year and the other is performing like new after about 2 years; and the sound quality is far superior to the RS ones.
Excellent product with the quality of other C.Crane products we have purchased.

I found the padding on the pillow speaker to be very uncomfortable. It is a rather large lump and not all that soft. The cord is also a bit long and usually ends up wound around my head, pillow or in the blankets. I was able to solve most of the issues by removing the speaker from the padding and using it as is. I also taped up the extra cord. I think a redesign is in order. Something softer with less padding and a shorter cord. The speaker is great.

Love this speaker. I use it at home, and I always take it with me when I travel or camp. I just bought my 4th one. The cord gets brittle near the connection to the speaker, and breaks. I believe it must be from touching hair or skin that makes the cord brittle. I have returned one within the one-year warranty before and it was replaced. Just remember to save your receipt, to be able to exchange it when the cord gets brittle.

First, let me address the criticism of this product by some reviewers here, this being that with time, the wire near the speaker gets stiff and the connection ultimately breaks. This is true. What else would one expect? The wire is thin enough so you won't feel it as you roll your head over it time and time again, eight hours a night, every night. It cannot possibly last forever. What would under those circumstances? I eventually throw away even my pillow itself. I would not buy one of these pillow speakers expecting it to last a lifetime. I use one for about a year and then I get another one. In fact, I buy two at a time so at the end of the first year or so, I have another. This happens to ALL pillow speakers, regardless of the brand.
Secondly, let me address one review here written by someone who admits to being hard of hearing and so he/she can't hear the radio through the pillow speaker. It's not the pillow speaker. It's you!
Now for the good news.
I love these SoftSpeakers. The sound quality is great. I didn't realize how tinny my radio shack pillow speakers sounded until I tried these. Also, the speaker is tiny and embedded in a plush, fabric case. You can lay it right between your pillow and your ear and not be the least bit uncomfortable while sleeping.
These pillow speakers are perfect for those of us who tend to lay awake at night because we think too much and who need some diversion in order to stop the thinking. If you sleep alone I suppose you could just leave the radio on but if you share a bed with a partner who is a better sleeper than you, that idea won't fly. If you haven't tried these, I say buy two today. I just took delivery on two more earlier this week although my old (stiff) one still works.

I can't imagine life without this wonderful speaker. After my RadioShack pillow speaker stopped working. RadioShack told me they discontinued the speaker so I googled the speaker hoping to find one on sale through a 3rd party. That's when I found C. Crane's amazing little speaker. It is superior in every way to my old one.
I'm surprised at other reviewer's difficulties with the cord. My old brand stopped working because of the cord. But the C. Crane model has a far more durable and flexible cord. I use my speaker every night. Because I wake up frequently and have difficulty falling back to sleep I listen to audio books on a walkman CD player. My walkman is on the bed near my pillows. I'm a restless sleeper who moves a lot in bed. I also shift between three pillows during the night. The speaker and cord survive constant abuse. I used my C.Crane speaker for 2 years before the cord failed--and the only reason the cord stopped working is because the speaker was under my pillow and my walkman fell off the bed and hung by the cord. I can't imagine the cord on any similar device being more durable.
I also love the plush speaker cover. Speaker is comfortable to use, durable, great sound, great quality, and best of all I can play the audio book loud enough to hear it clearly yet my husband next to me hears nothing and sleeps soundly.

I have to agree with one the previous reviewers...I too have had TWO of these and love them but they do not last long. They last about one year, and I too am not rough with it. Both times the break occurs where the wires go into the speaker. I am going back to regular earbuds to save money. If not for the short life it would get five stars.

About a year ago, I ordered the Pillow Soft Speaker. It was delivered faster than I expected, which is always nice. Better than that, it is still giving me great nights of clear sound. I looked around locally to see if I could find a nice pillow speaker, but I found nothing of quality. Since I had bought the CC Radio, I decided to look at the website for a pillow speaker. I do not baby my equipment. I use it and I must admit to using my pillow speaker quite roughly. I use it every day and I use it to connect to my computer when I travel, which is often. To this day it has not failed or even looked like it would break. The craftmanship of this is equal to their fine radio. I cannot say enough good things about the product, nor about the company. Take my word for it, this is a speaker you will be happy with!

Without question Soft Speaker Pillow not only the most comfortable but lets by sweaty sleep. Great if you stay up for nighttime radio like coast program. Totally COOL. Thanks C. Crane Co. If you're diabetic like me this holds up nicely for me compared to buds or headphones testament to its quality.

"I ordered the CCRadio along with the Easy Turn and the SoftSpeaker
Pillow Speaker for my husband for his birthday. I wanted to let you know how delighted we both are with your products.
My husband not only enjoys listening to talk radio at night in bed but needs to in order to fall asleep as he has ringing
in his ears. He also has some hearing loss so the volume is usually pretty high. Unfortunately this keeps me from
sleeping because of the sometimes poor quality of the radio station reception, the volume level, and /or getting interested
in the program he has on. The pillow speaker has allowed me to get a good night's sleep!"
