Out of all the pocket radios we've tested that do not have built-in speakers, the Sony SRF-M37W Walkman Radio has THE BEST AM radio reception. Customer recommendations brought this radio to our attention. Our tests confirmed that this compact, easy-to-use radio has great AM sensitivity. However, if you are close to an AM broadcast antenna you may notice some bleeding into other adjacent stations on the dial. FM reception is comparable to our other fine pocket radios. Features 20 station presets (5 Weather, 10 FM, 5 AM), direct weather band button, local/distant (DX) switch for improved reception, hold switch to prevent accidental station changes, battery indicator, and LCD Digital Display with clock. Stereo headphones and belt clip also included. Exceptional battery life of over 40 hours on just one "AAA" alkaline battery (not included). Dimensions: 3.375" W x 2.5" H x 1.31" D. Weight: 3.3 oz including battery and belt clip. - Excellent Reception

The SRF-M37W will run for over 40 hours on just one AAA battery.
|
No. The Sony SRF-M37W does not have an external speaker. If you would like to listen to the radio without headphones, you could, however, use it with an FM Transmitter connected to the headphone jack.
|
The radio has 5 AM, 5 WX, and 10 FM presets.
|
The key symbol means that the lock switch has been turned on. While this lock function is on, the radio controls will not operate. To turn the lock function off, move the hold switch in the opposite direction of the arrow.
|
The switch located directly below the headphone jack is the LO/DX switch. This switch is to be used when you're having reception problems. If youre on a local station and you're receiving interference, change the switch to the LOCAL position to improve reception. The majority of the time the switch should be in the DX position.
|
WX: 1 channel FM: 0.1 MHz AM: 10 KHz
|
If you do not replace the batteries within 3 minutes you will lose all memory presets that you have programmed into the radio.
|
FM: 87.5-108 MHz AM: 530-1710 KHz WX: 1-7ch
|
The warranty is valid for 1 year parts & labor.

Excellent product. Have used for 4 years and love it, very sensitive to water damage but very durable other wise. Have dropped it while running numerous times without damage. Will continue to purchase if available.

I love this handy, little AM/FM radio. Use it every day going back & forth to work on the train and when I walk my dog. I especially like the "lock" so I don't accidentally change the station or turn the radio on or off. It locks the station in place, but you can still adjust the volume. I also find the weather band a plus.

The Sony SRF-M37W Walkman is a great rugged, simple, little radio with the following pros and cons.
Pros:
1) Small and light weight.
2) Reliable display, buttons, and slide switch.
3) Excellent reception.
4) User replaceable battery (AAA), giving the user a choice of disposable alkaline or rechargeable NiMH batteries, and allowing quick and easy replacement of a bad battery without any special tools or knowledge.
5) Very rugged and reliable, with one exception. It will survive many drops from three feet, even onto cement driveways and sidewalks, and asphalt paved streets, other than nicks, scrapes, and scratches. The exception is the battery cover which will break under normal usage, fall off, and get lost. Other than the batter cover design defect, I wish all products were built this rugged.
How does this little radio get dropped? The headphone or ear-bud cord gets caught on a door knob or something else as you walk by, it falls out of your pocket, possibly while you are sitting down and getting up, or you set it down in your lap as you sit in a car (or elsewhere), and you forget about it as you get up and out (similar for cell phone drops). Don''t leave radios, cell phones, flashlights, or other expensive and fragile objects in your lap while sitting in a car or elsewhere, unless you want to do a drop test when you get up.
6) The detachable belt clip comes off easily and can get lost. When removed, the back of the radio is not as smooth.
7) The Band button emits a beep tone when you cycle through AM, FM, Weather, and back to AM again. This is useful in the dark.
8) The radio won''t shut off automatically while recording to a separate recorder or MP3 player because it does not have an auto-shutoff timer to conserve battery power when falling asleep or if you forget to turn the radio off. If an auto-shutoff timer is provided, it should be user-selectable to disable it or select from one of several time values. Lack of a user-selectable auto-shutoff timer is a con, as listed below.
9) Has a useful hold / key lock slide switch to disable the buttons to prevent accidental button presses when the radio is in a pocket.
10) The clock function which displays the time is useful, although it only displays 12-hour time without AM and PM.
Cons:
1) The battery cover will break, fall off, and get lost under normal usage. However, the single AAA battery will usually be retained without the battery cover unless you drop the radio.
2) Short battery life. This is a weakness if you plan to use this radio as a serious emergency radio, unless you have plenty of batteries, or rechargeable batteries and an effective solar battery charger. An alkaline disposable battery or NiMH rechargeable battery will last about two days with heavy use, especially if you fall asleep listening to the radio. If you have plenty of rechargeable batteries on hand and a battery charger that charges four or more at a time, this is not a problem.
3) Uses a single AAA battery instead of one or two AA batteries for longer battery life.
4) No optional/selectable auto-shutoff timer to conserve battery power when falling asleep or when you forget to turn the radio off. Any auto-shutoff timer feature, if provided, should be user selectable to disable the timer while recording off the radio earphone jack, and should provide multiple count-down timer settings from five or ten minutes to one hour (e.g., 10, 20, 30, 45, 60 minutes; or 15, 30, 45, 60 minutes; etc.).
5) No High-Definition (HD) AM radio capability.
6) No digital TV audio capability.
7) The dedicated weather band button adjacent to the Preset Memory #5 button is a nuisance, and is easy to press by accident in the dark or by feel. This button should have been used for a Preset Memory #6 for each band/bank of preset memories.
8) Lacks a display backlight. If one is included in the future, it should use an LED and be under user on/off control to conserve battery power, such as using a momentary switch or a slide switch to turn it on and off.
9) Lacks an internal speaker, however, that would increase the size and weight, and add one more thing that can be susceptible to vibration, dust, and moisture, and that can fail. However, this can be a pro because the radio is smaller, lighter weight, and, more robust by not having an internal speaker.

I''ve owned this radio for about 10 years and just recently bought a 2nd one . The battery life from this little set is very good .
The pre-sets are easy to manage, and use even in the dark , using the '' Braille ''
method .
It does everything I want it to do as far as reception . So easy to use, I can even change the battery in the dark .
Why do I have 2 radios you ask ? One is for the bedroom , music and talk radio .
The other one is for the living room, and /or travel . Same pre-sets on both radios.

This is for the Sony SRF-M37W radio. I have had this radio for years. I like the pickup on AM as well as FM.
The weather band portion isn't too bad. With FM & weather band you have to play with the antenna. (your headphone cord) Not
so much FM, but DX'ing on FM, it is helpful to try positions with the cord . AM this radio is hot. I use mine mostly for
AM talk radio programs. The presets are great. I use mine in bed at night, in total darkness and use the ' braille' method
of tuning. Count by ten when tuning up or down. Finding the stations on presets is easy too. Depending on radio propagation,
I have talk stations ready from Omaha, Cinncinatti , and St Paul MN. Fading is no problem, just seek the correct preset and
you rarely miss a word.
The digital readout is handy for IDing unknown stations. At least you have the frequency down.
I use rechargable batteries and keep one on standby. Changing batteries in the dark is no challenge.
I would be lost without this little radio. Thank you for reading.
