Since we don't get any HD
Radio stations up here in Fortuna, CA, we tested several new hd
radio receivers in one of the largest HD
radio cities - Los Angeles. The Sangean HDT-1 HD
Radio Component Tuner actually out-performed two other stand-alone
hd radio tuners on reception of a few weak HD
digital radio stations (89.3.95.5 and 104.3). While the other two
radios did not pick up the HD
signals for these stations, the Sangean did without any trouble.
The Sangean HDT-1 also picked up 89.3's other 2 HD
Signals, and the extra HD
signal for 95.5 and 104.3 - which were not available on the other
two HD radio tuners.
With our FM
Reflect Antenna attached the Sangean HD
Radio picked up two more stations than with the stock antenna (98.7
and 101.9 - and the extra HD channels for each).
AM HD reception was poor no matter what (same as with all the HD
radios we've tested) - though it did pick up one HD
AM station with a strong signal 710. It should be noted that the
HDT-1 picks up all the same AM Analog stations as the Sonido
Radio.
At just $200 the Sangean HDT-1 HD
Radio is a good deal for a reliable HD
radio receiver. The remote takes some getting used to, however.
You have to hit "preset" before the number to go to a preset station,
and in order to preset a station you just hit the number and keep
it pressed - it's the opposite of what would make the most sense
- since once it's set it would be nice to go to a preset station
directly. Also, the lack of volume control was buggy since it required
having to use my amplifier's remote - or getting up to adjust the
volume. The unit itself looks really good - and even got some compliments
in styling from people who visited our place. One other feature
worth noting on the Sangean HD
Radio is the HD Seek button
(on the remote and the unit). It makes it easy to locate and tune
in local HD digital radio
stations. RCA outputs - (RCA type audio cable included).
Overall I give the Sangean HDT-1 HD
Radio Component Tuner high marks - and recommend it highly for the
radio enthusiast.
