The Midland LXT 114 handheld radios give excellent range for 2-way communication.
They are compatible on all 22 channels with the Midland Base Camp Radio operating on both the GMRS and FRS radio frequencies. These radios are great for keeping track of the kids while camping, backing up your RV, installing TV antennas or other activities where you need to communicate with another person who is out of your sight. When all normal services are down during disasters and other emergencies, you can use them to stay in touch. Kids just might like to play with them, too.
They use three "AAA" batteries or can be charged using an optional charger and rechargeable batteries (not included). Operation on FRS frequencies requires no license. (GMRS frequencies require FCC licensing.)
The maximum range of 18 miles can only be achieved over water or direct line of sight under optimum conditions. We were able to make reasonable contact under unreasonable conditions at three miles away behind a hill. We have never used any two-way radios that worked this well before.
