You may have noticed this new acronym popping up on some of our products. RoHS stands for Restrictions on Hazardous Substances, and it's a directive that could have a huge impact on the production and disposal of consumer electronics. First adopted in Europe in 2006 (and later adopted in California in 2007), RoHS restricts the use of six dangerous substances in lots of common electronics. According to the official RoHS compliance Web site (www.rohs.eu), the RoHS symbol indicates that "new electrical and electronic equipment put on the market does not contain any of the six banned substances: lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, poly-brominated biphenyls (PBB) or polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), in quantities exceeding maximum concentration values."

While some military and medical equipment is exempt from RoHS compliance, the electronics governed by the standard are among the most common you’ll find in your home, from radios to MP3 players to cell phones and (increasingly) computers. In practical terms, the standard protects factory workers at the production level, sharply reducing their exposure to hazardous substances. The standard also has a profound impact on the disposal and recycling of electronics, in that disposed substances will no longer have at least six of the most hazardous chemicals formerly found in electronics, and recycled electronics will not expose workers to toxics as they harvest components.

The Midland XT511 Base Camp Radio is a 22 channel 2-way radio that can be used to communicate with any other FRS or GMRS type of walkie-talkies. It has the ability to encode your chosen frequency with one of 121 CTCSS/DCS codes. By selecting one of these codes you will only hear those other stations that you want to hear and not be interrupted by other users on the same channel. This makes it a very versatile radio to be used both during emergency situations and for camping and other outdoor activities. By turning off the codes, you will be able to you to keep in touch with your neighborhood disaster center and other neighbors during an emergency and be assured that you will receive all important calls.

Keep in touch with those around you. The Base Camp Radio provides for hands-free operation using one of several optional headsets that are available. This makes this radio ideal for hiking, biking, or other outdoor activities.

We put this radio to a realistic test and found that they could effectively communicate over one-half mile on FRS frequencies under less than ideal urban terrain. Your mileage may vary depending on conditions and could be up to 20 miles under ideal line of sight conditions on GMRS frequencies.

You won't be left unaware of important weather notices with the Base Camp Radio. It is a NOAA Weather Radio as well, which allows you to keep informed of weather reports for your area directly from NOAA. It also provides a Weather Alert function which, when enabled, will alert you to all important weather broadcasts that will be affecting your area.

The Base Camp Radio has a very easy to use menu system that allows you to turn on or off the many features that are included, making this radio easy to use right out of the box. The Base Camp Radio can be powered by its built-in hand crank to charge its internal NiMH battery pack or by using 4 "AA" batteries. It also comes equipped with its own AC/DC charging unit to charge the internal NiMH battery pack.

Finally, the XT511 Base Camp Radio is a standard broadcast AM/FM receiver providing good sensitivity for the entire AM and FM band. The XT511 Base Camp Radio will keep you informed, entertained and in contact with those around you in both times of play and emergency. This new Midland is an exceptional radio for the money. Operation on FRS frequencies requires no license. (GMRS frequencies requires FCC licensing.) Weight: 3.25 lbs. Size: 7.25" W x 6.5" H x 2.75" D. 3-year manufacturer's warranty.
