You may have noticed this new acronym popping up on some of our products. RoHS stands for Restrictions on Hazardous Substances, and it's a directive that could have a huge impact on the production and disposal of consumer electronics. First adopted in Europe in 2006 (and later adopted in California in 2007), RoHS restricts the use of six dangerous substances in lots of common electronics. According to the official RoHS compliance Web site (www.rohs.eu), the RoHS symbol indicates that "new electrical and electronic equipment put on the market does not contain any of the six banned substances: lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, poly-brominated biphenyls (PBB) or polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), in quantities exceeding maximum concentration values."
While some military and medical equipment is exempt from RoHS compliance, the electronics governed by the standard are among the most common you'll find in your home, from radios to MP3 players to cell phones and (increasingly) computers. In practical terms, the standard protects factory workers at the production level, sharply reducing their exposure to hazardous substances. The standard also has a profound impact on the disposal and recycling of electronics, in that disposed substances will no longer have at least six of the most hazardous chemicals formerly found in electronics, and recycled electronics will not expose workers to toxics as they harvest components.
|Perfectly simple and simply perfect - F. Hopkins|
I bought this radio because I was frustrated with the various digital radios we have in the house. Those radios glow all night long, will play all kinds of media, from am/fm radio to CD to MP3, have preset stations, have a clock, and are so complicated to use that I waste a lot of time adjusting them - and then the reception is not good. The worst part is when the power flickers or goes out and then you have to reset the everything.
Now comes the C. Crane radio and voila! it works right out of the box! Just plug it in, turn the dial to the station you desired station, turn the dial to the desired volume, and you are greeted with great sound, clear reception, and if the station needs tweaking, just turn the dial a bit and it clears up. I particularly like the light - if you want the dial to light up push a button to turn it on. The dial is placed horizontally at the top of the radio, it has a nice white back light, the numbers are easy to see, the station poiter is a red vertical strip that moves as you turn the knob. Simple, easy to use, easy to see, and it does what it needs to do....
The radio that is "just a radio"!
The portable CCRadio-EP could be considered a super radio; built for ease of use and outstanding long range AM performance.
"Upon receiving this product I was so pleased it stood up to the description provided at the website. This is the third radio I have purchased for my 89 year old mother who wanted a simple am fm radio with very good sound and reception, but the first to have the qualities she wanted. It has those qualities and more, but remains simple to operate and easy to see to operate for a person with slightly impaired vision and hard of hearing. Thanks for your honest description of the product and a price that was worth it." Cinder
Great for listening to Talk Radio, NPR, Music and Sports
The EP has a wide bass and treble adjustment range for defined music and voice reproduction. A large, 5-inch speaker is combined with a hi-fidelity amplifier and a "Music/Voice" enhancement dial to give extra clarity to AM programs.
Just received this great radio in the mail this week and have been enjoying it ever since. Tried three other radios with built in AM/FM antenna and they all failed to get reception of NPR, classical radio stations, and no AM stations at all.....This radio solved all this.....Before I could not get any AM stations, now I can listened to several. I'm not one to leave reviews, and this may well be my first, but this radio is awesome. I bought it strictly for the AM function in anticipation of baseball season (GO BRAVES!). I can now pick up stations at my house that I can't even pick up in the city on my vehicle radio. I now have ESPN Radio and all of the stations that broadcast the Braves. No more GameDay Audio for this baseball fan. J Wilburn
For very weak AM stations you can fine tune our built-in Twin Coil Ferrite AM Antenna.
The fine tuning feature is great for singling out a station when there is interference from a nearby frequency. For instance, when I need 1630 out of Augusta, GA there is bleedover from a gospel station in Columbia, SC and I can twist the little knob and it will take out the gospel. It's also got this nifty music/voice knob that allows me to take a lot of the whistle/whine out of the broadcast when it's just people talking. J Wilburn
The EP is a true "analog" radio with needle and dial tuning, so there will be some variance in the accuracy of the needle and dial. We are constantly working on improving the accuracy of the EP while still maintaining the great reception and reasonable price, but if you need pinpoint precision we would recommend one of our digital radios.
Weight: 4.5 lbs. Size: 11.4" W x 7.3" H x 2.75" D.
|Twin Coil Ferrite (TCF) AM Fine Tuning|
The AM fine tuning consists of extra circuitry and 2 extra coils around the ferrite antenna. It should be called the Quad Coil™. It is a new experimental design. You do not have to adjust the TCF knob from the default position to receive excellent AM performance. The TCF knob does have some effect for fine tuning and it will have various and perhaps curious results depending on the strength of the AM signal and the time of day. You should find the EP is one of the best radios you have used on AM.

This is a bit embarrassing, but we built it for my mother. I asked her one day if she was enjoying her CCRadioPlus I gave her. With a little prodding she looked at me in a way only a mother can and she said: "I don’t like all the buttons". About six months later a customer came in the store in a focused rush and asked for a radio "without all the buttons... just a regular radio". I knew at that moment we had to build the EP knowing full well that success was to be measured by customer satisfaction and not necessarily money (most people have no idea of the actual cost to develop a new product, even a simple radio). I told him to come back in a year or two. He probably thought I was blowing smoke!
Now back to my mother. I know she is smart. She drove safely until she was over 90 and she still continues to watercolor on a limited basis. She did not start painting until she was well into her 80’s. The point is my mother did not want to spend her valuable time learning some sequence of buttons perpetrated by a somewhat insensitive electronics expert.
We’ve had a great response to this radio. One of the best was a call from a woman in charge of a music department at a university. She said she was prepared to get ripped off with the purchase of the CCRadio-EP but was wildly surprised at the audio quality alone. We have received numerous letters written in long hand in appreciation of the EP. If you’re looking for a simple radio with good performance and a reasonable price, the CCRadio-EP is an excellent choice.
The CCRadio-EP has excellent AM reception almost as good as our CCRadio-2. The EP brings simple joy back to radio listening.
A set of D Alkaline batteries rated at 21000 mAh would provide roughly 300 hours of runtime. This is based on AM band usage and if the radio is played at a moderate volume level with the display light off.
They're used as an indicator to help locate a frequency.
Try nulling out the signal by turning the radio in a slightly different direction. You can also modify the amount of signal being let in by adjusting the tone knob from Music to Voice setting. Lastly, try adjusting the Twin Coil Ferrite tuner knob.
First, check the back of the radio and make sure the Internal/External switch is set to Internal. Next check the Twin Coil Tuning Knob to make sure it is in the center position.
