Perfectly simple and simply perfect - F. Hopkins

I bought this radio because I was frustrated with the various digital radios we have in the house. Those radios glow all night long, will play all kinds of media, from am/fm radio to CD to MP3, have preset stations, have a clock, and are so complicated to use that I waste a lot of time adjusting them - and then the reception is not good. The worst part is when the power flickers or goes out and then you have to reset the everything.

Now comes the C. Crane radio and voila! it works right out of the box! Just plug it in, turn the dial to the station you desire, turn the dial to the desired volume, and you are greeted with great sound, clear reception, and if the station needs tweaking, just turn the dial a bit and it clears up.... Simple, easy to use, easy to see, and it does what it needs to do....

Built With Simplicity in Mind

CCRadio-EP, a radio that is "just a radio"!

The portable CCRadio-EP could be considered a super radio; built for ease of use and outstanding long range AM performance.

"Upon receiving this product I was so pleased it stood up to the description provided at the website. This is the third radio I have purchased for my 89 year old mother who wanted a simple am fm radio with very good sound and reception, but the first to have the qualities she wanted. It has those qualities and more, but remains simple to operate and easy to see to operate for a person with slightly impaired vision and hard of hearing. Thanks for your honest description of the product and a price that was worth it." Cinder

Great for listening to Talk Radio, NPR, Music and Sports

The EP has wide bass and treble adjustment range for defined music and voice reproduction. A large 5-inch speaker is combined with a hi-fidelity amplifier and a "Music/Voice" enhancement dial to give extra clarity to AM programs.

Fine Tuning for Excellent AM Reception

For those weak AM stations simply fine tune the built-in Twin Coil Ferrite AM Antenna.

The fine tuning feature is great for singling out a station when there is interference from a nearby frequency. For instance, when I need 1630 out of Augusta, GA there is bleedover from a gospel station in Columbia, SC and I can twist the little knob and it will take out the gospel. It's also got this nifty music/voice knob that allows me to take a lot of the whistle/whine out of the broadcast when it's just people talking. J Wilburn

Includes external antenna jacks for those who live or work in a metal or concrete building and enjoy listening to a radio.

The EP is a true "analog" radio with needle and dial tuning, so there will be some variance in the accuracy of the needle and dial. If you need pinpoint precision we would recommend taking a look at our digital radios.

Weight: 4.5 lbs. Size: 11.4" W x 7.3" H x 2.75" D.

  • AM/FM Portable Radio

Twin Coil Ferrite (TCF) AM Fine Tuning

The AM fine tuning consists of extra circuitry and 2 extra coils around the ferrite antenna. It should be called the Quad Coil™. It is a new experimental design. You do not have to adjust the TCF knob from the default position to receive excellent AM performance. The TCF knob does have some effect for fine tuning and it will have various and perhaps curious results depending on the strength of the AM signal and the time of day. You should find the EP is one of the best radios you have used on AM.

Awful, Dont Waste Good Money, a zero star rating
C.Crane, CCRadio-EP, SN# G10301583. Awful radio, frustrating, a complete waste of money. Bought this radio 2-3 years ago for my Mother as she moved into assisted living so she could listen to her favorite AM station. It never worked properly. Living close to the station, the AM signal was poor at best and the radio would drift off signal requiring re-tuned several times an hour. I ended up with the radio but used it seldom due to its poor quality. Today I tried to turn on the radio and it is completely dead – the only thing that works is the dial light, no static, nothing. Will never buy anything with CCrane nametag and will go out of my way to tell everyone I know to never buy CCrane. Dont waste good money. (I tried to give this a zero star rating, but it requires at least one star to post a review - ITS REALLY A ZERO STAR RATING)

A really excellent buy, one of a kind. Superior sound on both AM and FM bands, this radio is truly meant for the serious radio listener. If you really enjoy radio, you will really enjoy the CCRadio EP.

Simply great!
In our over-complicated, theres an app for that world, its so nice to have a device that simply does one thing very well, is very simple to use and doesnt try to be anything its not. I love this straightforward plain radio. Its classic design and style make it easy to operate. Performance is excellent. Sound is wonderful. And it will never crash or need an update or a reboot. So refreshing!

poor quality
Had to return my first one as the tuner broke as others have noted. Great customer service. The new one worked for a month or so. Now the AM reception has a static not related to reception. Tested with other AM radios so to confirm that it is the EP. Both EP’s had frequent station drift. I’m going to call about returning this one too. I don’t want another one.

Marginal at best
This radio definitely needs some improvement. Seemed to work quite well for the first few weeks but: static plagued tuning, near constant station drift, and after only two or three months (as others experienced)the station dial broke on this one too. I removed back of radio to determine cause: the under-designed overstressed thin plastic pin that holds the tuning pulley snapped in two (unrepairable) rendering the unit to landfill status.

Works way out here!
Just received this great radio in the mail this week and have been enjoying it ever since. Tried three other radios with built in AM/FM antenna and they all failed to get reception of NPR, classical radio stations, and no AM stations at all. I live between Louisville and Lexington where most of the FM stations I like are located besides this I live along a big hill. All this has meant poor or no reception. This radio solved all this. I feared that I would have to order an external antenna too, but the stations are coming in fine and hold the station, even when I walk away from the radio. Surprise! I did have to move the radio closer to a window in my kitchen, but thats it. Give this a try if you are having trouble pulling in stations. Before I could not get any AM stations, now I can listened to several. The telescoping FM antenna really does the trick: just list old time radios used to all be equipped with. This may not be the best looking radio youll ever owned, but it will do what it is supposed to do: tune-in a radio station. Thanks!

I purchesed the Ccrane EP,out of the box it looked great and the sound was good. Two weeks later after minimal use The radio would no longer adjust stations. Upon removeal of the back case it was clear that the radio was un repairable.Ccrane stated that they would replace it after i sent it back. It was a seventy-nine dollar radio, and my time is valuable, between that and the headakes. It is just not worth it.I am very disapointed and would not recomend this radio.

I bought one; it did not work at all. I had no trouble returning it and getting a replacement. Unfortunately the replacement did not work well. Very "scratchy" tuning. Tuning drifts easily. Each time I turn it on I have to retune very precisely to get reception. I can not recommend it.

A nice looking radio. Handle is good. AM is fine. CCRadio works great. Be sure to make your selection on the back of the radio to Internal Antenna for AM and External Antenna for FM. Customer Service is very responsive. Quickly helped me sort my concerns out. Mike in Colorado Springs

I have posted a technical analysis here: the GE Superadio series has been discontinued, this is the logical replacement. I have found this equal to the GE SR's in terms of reception. Some models of GE are slightly better on some stations, the CCEP is superior on others. The narrow IF selectivity setting of the CCEP is much narrower than the GE SR3, giving the CCEP a huge edge on selectivity. The tunable twin coil antenna also aids in separating out closely packed stations. Only the SRF-59 with its 50 kHz IF is superior in selectivity. It is nice to have stereo FM capability through the headphone jack, something missing on the GE radios. FM performance is better than the GE series, bringing in rimshots with ease. Hooking to an external antenna produces astonishing reception for a portable. I have not experienced the instability some reviewers have noted, but using the radio outdoors in the narrow IF position on hot days does produce some drift, forcing you to re-tune in extremely critical situations.

This very abused radio rides around in the back of my vehicle full time. I take it out at parks, the beach, working in the garage, and poolside. I run it on battery almost exclusively. I have great reception and audio with conditions I am sure it was never intended for. I would give the AM reception a 5. The FM I use to receive the XM radio in my vehicle parked nearby often, and can pick up the very weak XM FM transmitter from inside the car at nearby picnic tables with ease. Another great product by CCrane. :) hope this didn't void my warranty :)

I purchased 2 EP radio's and 2 SoftSpeaker speakers Christmas 2011. They are high quality and the EP picks up distant AM stations clearly at night. I listened to T. Hendel’s review prior to buying and it was accurate.

I am very disappointed in this radio. It has some excellent features that I and others in the house really liked. But it has a major problem and that is it will not hold a local station for very long and then we cannot find it even using the helper knob in the side that is supposed to bring in stations clearer. CC Crane needs to go to work on this problem. We have six other radios in the house and not one of them behave as this one does. Stations drift some but not just totally loose it and than cannot tune it back in.

I am very satisfied with my EP radio. I had an original CC Radio that I purchased many years ago and it had finally been beaten into submission after years of faithful use and abuse. This radio is exactly what I wanted. I like listening to Giants games on KNBR from my home in Red Bluff -- the games come in great, day and night, indoor and out. Both bands get clear, clean reception -- good sound quality. I like the analog tuning -- you can tweak it here and there. The fine tuning knob is fun to play with but not something you use a lot. This is a great, elegant, high performer at a great price!!! I have already recommended it to two close friends.

Bought this for my father for Xmas. It has great sound. Tuner dial lights up nicely and very simple to use. Overall great sound. Mine had tiny spot near nameplate looked liked QC issue with glue or something dripping but not significant enough to worry about. Overall radio so good I just wanted it to be perfect.

Disappointing and inferior to even an old GE Super radio. Unlike my Super radio, this one drifts; when you turn it on, it is always off from the last tuned station, and while it is on, it has to be frequently re-tuned. I had hoped for near-CCRadio performance without having to deal with a dead LCD display, but this radio is not a contender.

Used it for the first time last night. It worked beautifully, pulling in distant AM and FM stations very clearly. Overall it reminds me a lot of my old GE Super Radio III. But its smaller and better with a back light for the dial, an AM fine tuner and a switch for turning the optional external antennas either off or on.Chuck 12-11-10

  • Why did we build the CCRadio-EP?

We built it for my mother. I asked her one day if she was enjoying her CCRadioPlus digital radio I had given her. With a little prodding she looked at me in a way only a mother can and she said: "I don’t like all the buttons". About six months later a customer came in the store in a focused rush and asked for a radio "without all the buttons... just a regular radio". I knew at that moment we had to build the EP

  • How does the new CCRadio-EP compare with the CCRadio-2E?

The CCRadio-EP has excellent AM reception almost as good as our CCRadio-2E. The EP brings simple joy back to radio listening.
  • How long will a fresh set of D-size Alkaline batteries power the radio?

A set of D Alkaline batteries rated at 21000 mAh would provide roughly 300 hours of runtime. This is based on AM band usage and if the radio is played at a moderate volume level with the display light off.
  • What are the numbers at the top of the display used for (0-10)?

They're used as an indicator to help locate a frequency.
  • I am experiencing bleed over from competing stations on AM; is there any way to resolve this?

Try nulling out the signal by turning the radio in a slightly different direction. You can also modify the amount of signal being let in by adjusting the tone knob from Music to Voice setting. Lastly, try adjusting the Twin Coil Ferrite tuner knob.
  • I am completely unable to receive AM on my CCRadio-EP; is something set wrong?

First, check the back of the radio and make sure the Internal/External switch is set to Internal. Next check the Twin Coil Tuning Knob to make sure it is in the center position.

  • This is an excellent internet radio. I have had the unit playing constantly from the time I received it. Excellent sound for such a small unit and the remote works wonderfully.

  • Good sound, lightweight and comfortable; not too tight on the head. I like one feature; it doesn't tell you where to place the speakers, left side or right side.

  • I purchase this product specifically for AM recordings and it has worked superbly. I wanted to wait awhile before I gave my opinion on the product. It has worded exactly as advertised and more.

  • Very nice, economical home lighting. If you're used to the white light of fluorescent bulb replacements, these will offer the same type with no toxic ingredients or damaging UV radiation.

  • This antenna does work well; however placement and the shape you have it bent into is very important. I live about 70 miles away from Toronto and receive a lot of Toronto FM stations static free with the FM reflect.
