The BEST
I have had 3 of these radios and each has performed to my expectation. The first one was dropped at a high enough to crack the circuit board,my fault, the second was dropped into the dogs water dish and fried the internals now this one has been through a lot and like a Timex watch it keeps on ticking.

Love this pocket radio but the antenna fell off and is most important to the function of this radio. Hoping to find a solution.

Performed well for about 16 months, then FM stopped working
As a few other reviewers have noted, the only issue I had with this radio out of the box was the lack of fine control over the speaker volume. For me alone in a quiet room close to the radio, the volume steps from zero, to too soft, to louder than Id like. But the more important failing of this radio for me is that the FM tuner section apparently failed about a year ago. One of my favorite news sources is an FM station - KPBS in San Diego at 89.5 MHz. I cant get the CC SW Pocket to tune in to that frequency - It seems to pick up stations at random now, and never what the frequency indicator says. It was OK while it lasted and still works on AM and the two SW bands, but I wouldnt buy it again unless its deficiencies are corrected.

I only had this radio about a week when the tuning dial didnt work. Besides that I like the features of the radio it will shut off after you sent it for a set amount of minutes saving battery life.

Volume Control is stepped.
Volume Control is thru two buttons: up or down. The volume is stepped and frequently too loud or too soft. Sometimes impossible to get right. Otherwise, a great radio.

Three-and-three-quarters. At my age I do not wish to learn another "operating system" so I downgraded it. It gets almost a gazillion channels and one can either put them in one's own sequential order or recall how to "get" the station wanted. Too much trouble at my age. Can't speak to durability as it is in my bathroom, so for ruggedness and maltreatment, it is your chance to buy. The plus is battery life and clarity. This little guy does put out the sound and I've had the same battery in for the longest.Oh, and because of my age (I am closer to heaven than most here) nothing gets a 5, except the next life.

Does not work well at all. I have radios that are 30+ years old that operate better than this one. Reception is terrible and the lock button doesn't work at all. This means that it frequently turns on during travel, depleting the batteries.30 day satisfaction guarantee is a joke. Because I was (3 years) past 30 days when I complained of the above I was offered a $10 discount to purchase another product.Customer service and standing behind the product are terrible for this company.I would not buy anything from a company that doesn't stand behind its products.

This is my second radio of this kind. My first radio wore out and the station selector broke but I decided to purchase a new model. My brother is a mail man and I gave him the set to use in the postal truck, he really likes it because of the small size and that he can mount it in the truck and listen to it. The tuner works great and he can pick up stations that are far away and the AM band is just as good. In my estimation the radio is superior to even larger models. I will be buying from you in the future. Thanks for great merchandise.

This is an outstanding radio, although it is much smaller than one can imagine from the catalog.Tonight, for the first time, I have been messing with its shortwave functions. I am seeking advice on how to find the fun stuff. This radio is outstanding in the AM band. I expect no less in SW. What I know about SW, though, would take no space on the head of a pin.I am willing to learn if someone would just point me in the right direction.

I have had this model since December 2012. I have purchased numerous radios from C.Crane and USUALLY find them to surpass the quality of any other brand on the market AND even be better than the descriptions listed on the Spec. sheet of the C.Crane website.Today 4/3/13 I received an email promotion which featured this model and stating HOW SUPERIOR the reception is, even when traveling and staying in a hotel far from home.WELL, as a current owner and almost daily user of the CC SW Radio "in MY opinion" the statements made by the C.Crane staff are WAY OVERSTATED. For instance, I live in Davis which is about 10 miles from Sacramento, line of sight, no natural barriers (mountains, valleys, etc) in the way to block an FM signal. REALITY for me is I typically get marginal reception of full strength FM stations across 10 miles.I usually listen to 94.7, 88.9 or 90.9 (two are NPR stations, the other is a regular format). The reception can be horrible, even when I'm outside of any building. Signal drifts in and out and sometimes excessive static. All these stations are full strength signals and I would expect that 10 to 15 miles line of sight should get great reception, day or night. So, again my opinion, take what they say about the superior reception with a grain of salt.Let your own experience be your guide.I am NOT that satisfied.

We have owned this product for a month and have used it on a daily basis. We use it to replace a Sangean CC radio whose speaker failed. This is a fine product with a good sound and a wide range of features that are easily used. Other reviewers have commented on the favorite stations feature. While a bit awkward it is effective if used as directed. I have not had the opportunity to receive short wave radio stations and agree that a weather station function would be preferred. This radio's sound is pleasant for both voice and music broadcasts. Its size is wonderful for portability and easy movement from room to room or inside to outdoor listening. I would purchase this radio again and would strongly recommend to a friend.Four star rating for less than intuitive yet effective "favorite" stations as well as lack of weather band.

This radio is much more than expected, considering its diminutive size. Excellent features and good battery life even though I use it often. It slips easily into a shirt pocket. It also reflects the quality I've come to expect from C. Crane Company products over the years. I am going to get the A/C adapter for it, and replace a bulky tabletop dial unit which doesn't have the direct input features this CC SW Pocket radio has. I find the "Lock" feature especially useful in order to keep the radio from inadvertently wandering about the 'dial', raising the volume unexpectedly, or turning itself on or off if bumped. Good deal for the money.

I've had this radio for a couple years but rarely use it because it's toooo hard to find my favorite stations. I have tried to set them to memory and in favorites but the instructions are too confusing and I end up having to scroll through 6,000 stations numbers to get to my favorite stations. I was just out in the garden working and accidentally hit an unknown button and the radio switched to another station. I had to come back in the house, dig out the book and figure out how to get it back. There HAS to be an easier way to do this!! The instruction book needs to be rewritten also -- too confusing. And I'm not a dummy. I'm a web designer!

For the most part, this is a great little radio. After using it for a few years, I find that I don't like the fact that push button controls get tiring to deal with and worst of all the power button gets turned on while in my carrying case and kills the batteries. Nothing worse for me because I use my radio for white noise to get to sleep at night which especially needed when traveling. I will have to remove the batteries from now on. This last summer I found dead batteries twice. Bummer when you are looking forward to listening the radio evening time.Jay

I love everything about this radio, except one thing: The volume steps go from barely audible to too loud for some situations. It can be very annoying. There are times when I can't use the radio because of this major problem. The sound quality, it's ability to receive distant stations clearly, and it's battery life are definate pluses, but the volume control problem very often manages to get in the way of really enjoying this otherwise great radio. In fact, if it weren't for this one problem, it would be the perfect pocket radio. I have taken off two stars for this seriously annoying design flaw.

Great size and great price! I would give it a 5 full stars if not for two things that slightly annoy me: 1) the loud piercing sound when turning on, regardless of volume level (it's a high-pitched electronic squeal for half a second, just at power on); and 2) the volume at the lowest level is a bit too low, but the next step up (digital volume levels) is much too high. I really, REALLY wish there was a better "sweet spot" between the lowest and next up, as I listen to this at night while my wife tries to sleep...

Received this radio about a week ago and it performs very well. I bought it because of C. Crane's reputation for superior AM reception and have not been disappointed. I listen to a fringe AM station while I work and it performs nearly as well as my Sangean 909 (which I also bought from C Crane). It pleasantly surprised me by also pulling an FM station that defies any other "pocket" radio I have tried. On SW, I have been able to hear WWV sitting outside, but nothing else yet. An antenna jack might be a nice feature. The tiny speaker puts out a very good sound. I suspect that battery life will be shorter using the speaker, but I mostly use headphones.Good job on this set, C Crane. I would also like to own the CCRadio-EP.

I use this radio every day; even take it with me when I travel. I carry it from room to room at night to keep up with my favorite radio show. There’s always room to put it down where ever I am because of the small size, and I like having it on softly by my side rather than using loud volume from a stationary radio. But there are some very annoying downsides:The lowest volume setting is too soft, the next is too loud. I read this before I bought it and thought how bad could it be. It’s bad. I often face the speaker down to mute it.The alarm sets itself sometimes. Maybe because the button is next to the up volume button and gets depressed by mistake? Whenever I need to reset anything or even find a station, need to get out the manual. Way more options than I'll ever use, and not very intuitive. So, quality-very good, sound and reception are good, and it's holding up well now for over a year. But just enough flaws in the design to have me looking for a replacement.

I've had the radio a few months now and I like the radio overall but I have to agree with a few other reviewers. The volume is not right. It jumps too much when adjusting, especially at low levels. I'll hit my volume button three times before the volume changes and then it jumps a bunch. I like to listen to the radio at night when it's quiet but the lowest setting is too low, even with ear buds, and then next setting is too high. As I mentioned I have to hit the volume button three times before there is a change. If there were an intermediate level the radio would be perfect.

I ordered mine in 2008. The first one I received had a problem on the AM band. When I selected a channel a loud squeal/tone would be present on some frequencies (not standard heterodyne and not heard on my Superadio 2). At the time C. Crane tried to tell me it was normal but took the radio back after I insisted. I gave it a second chance and have been very pleased with the second one which came later in 2008. Though it is showing its age, it still works well on all bands. My only criticism is that the volume control settings need to be more granular as it goes from too soft to too loud in one click. I'm back to purchase one a birthday present for a friend. Overall, I find C. Crane's Customer service to be very high caliber (except for that first incident).

Pluses- Nice size.- Very good sensitivity.Minuses- When you turn it on with the power button, and press Favorites, it goes to the last preset, but then it makes this squawk sound for 2 seconds, very odd.- The buttons are noisy (loud pop-clicks), and some require extra force to push down, so it's inconsistent. So this is annoying and, when used in bed, will disturb any bed partner. Most TV remotes have soft quiet keypads, why can't this pocket radio?- The preset tuning is amazing slow! You press up or down arrow for the next preset and then have to wait about 2 seconds before the station is heard! If you skip through 10 stations, it will take a total of 20 seconds for just the tuning. It should be instant, esp. for AM. I've never used such a slow digital-preset. - The volume control is not continuously variable. You press the volume-up button and it goes up some pre-defined amount. I always found it to be either too loud or too soft. - When you turn on the radio, it doesn't go into Favorites mode first -- you have to press the Favorites key. Since Favorites mode is the most likely power-on mode, why not start up in that mode?- There is no switchable mono FM mode, so if you use a single (mono) earphone, you only hear the left channel of a stereo station. This radio would be good in some rare situations, or maybe for traveling, but not for frequent use or bed-side.

While this radio functions, the simple things are needlessly complicated - using presets, for example. Also, the granularity for the volume is very poor. It goes from too low to hear then one step up is way to loud. In the end, I was very disappointed in the radio and found an alternative.

First, you need to be an engineer to operate this thing. Next, you also better have a good memory to remember all the instructions…unless you use it everyday. But after 4 months it stopped responding to the controls anyway so I had to send it back.

The first SWPocket I received failed after awhile in service. C. Crane stood behind it 100% with a new replacement. I like to listen to AM talk radio at work at a manufacturing plant. It has excellent reception even inside the plant. I am very impressed and pleased with the performance of this little radio.

Reception is excellent for a small radio. The only distraction is the loud squelch noise this model makes when you turn it off.

Have had this radios for several years and it is OK but not great. It does not receive distant stations well even with the DX switch. It also seems to consume batteries rather quickly.

I bought this for when my power is out, which is frequent. I took it to the hospital with me for hip replacement surgery. In spite of all the RFI in the hospital it worked beautifully. Over a hundred hours run time on a pair of batteries. It was knocked off my table four times by nurses, four foot drops onto linoleum floors. No cracks or chips out of the case, not even a scratch. I love it.

Good, not great. AM reception is no better than the Sangean DT 400. SW reception is poor with the standard antenna. The best results are produced by using the old standby of holding the antenna near a power cord or phone cord. The absence of memory tuning is hard to get used to as well. The way the tuning is accomplished is fine once you get used to it. The tone is good and it is versatile, but not a great receiver

My experience with this radio was poor. The reception was dismal. C Crane came through though and exchanged it with the Sangean pocket radio, including free shipping! Great customer service.

More than met my expectations for sound quality and quality of reception. The small speaker puts out plenty of volume. The tuning knob is one of the best features and makes for fast and easy tuning. Highly recommended.

Overall, I have been favorably impressed with this little radios capability. The only glitch that keeps it from getting a five rating is its volume setting mechanism. The electronic volume control goes from 1 bar (too soft) to 3 bars (too loud). It refuses to set to 2 bars. Otherwise it is a very, very good product and value for the money.

Good radio, good reception. Here are the changes I would make. It would be nice just to press the button number 1 and the channel would go to whatever station you program the button. Sort of like a car radio, get to the station you like, press down and hold 1, and it programs the station in 1. And, I would make a second small volume knob under the tuning knob.

  • Will the alarm work if I leave headphones plugged in?

No, the alarm will not work if anything is plugged in the headphone socket.
  • When I press and hold the FAVORITES button, will the CCRadio SWP scan only the presets I have entered?

No, when you press and hold the FAVORITES button the CCRadio SWP will bring up the entire preset station memory list. Once in the memory list, you have 3 ways to choose a station you have set into memory:

    1. You can use the tuning dial to scroll through the preset numbers.
    2. You can use the Up and Down tuning buttons to scroll through the preset numbers.
    3. You can direct-enter a preset station's number by pressing the FREQ button and then entering the 3-digit preset number.
  • Why does FM 70.0 MHz come up on the preset numbers?

FM 70.0 MHz is the default number on each preset. This number will appear on the display until a new frequency is programmed into that memory slot.
  • Will resetting the radio wipe out all my presets?

No, resetting the radio will not clear the memory presets; removing all power sources from the radio does not clear presets either.
  • What are the possible sleep timer settings?

    You can set the sleep timer for 90, 85, 80, 75, 70, 65, 60, 55, 50, 45, 40, 35, 30, 25, 20, 15, 10, or 5 minutes.
  • If I accidentally activate the sleep timer setting, do I have to wait for the timer to go off before turning the radio back on?

No, the last choice in the sleep timer selection is on. Select 'on' and the radio will continue to play continuously.
  • How do I program stations in memory (favorites)?

    1. Turn radio on
    2. Press Band button to select FM, MW (AM), SW1 or SW2
    3. Find the station you would like to store in memory by one of the following methods:
      1. Turning the tuning knob
      2. Press the Freq button and then the frequency number using the numeric pad.
      3. Press and hold the Up/Down button for 1 second and it will scan until it picks up an active station
    4. Press the Mem/Time button
    5. The letters "CH" will flash and the number to the right is the memory location. You can select the memory with either of the following steps:
      1. While the CH is flashing, turn the Tuning Knob to select the memory location (00, 01, 02, etc.)
      2. While the CH is flashing, press the number on the keypad to select the memory location (00, 01, 02, etc.)
    6. Press the Mem/Time button again. Your station has been stored.
  • How do I recall stations in memory (favorites)?

    1. Press the Favorites button and use one of the following options when the M.SCAN shows in the upper right of the display:
      1. Turn the Tuning Knob clockwise or counter-clockwise to locate memory (favorites) location (00, 01, 02, etc.).
      2. Press the Up or Down Tuning buttons to scroll through memory (favorites) locations (00, 01, 02, etc.).
      3. Key in the memory (favorites) location (000, 001, 002, etc.). You must key in the 3 digit number because the CCRadio-SWPocket can store up to 200 favorites.

When you press the Favorites button it will stay in the M Scan mode until you turn the radio off or you press the Favorites button again.

  • How do I delete my presets on the CC SWPocket?

You cannot delete a preset once you have made one on the CC SWPocket. However, you can overwrite the previously used presets with any new station of your choice.
  • Does the beep tone alarm option use the humane wake system?

    No.

  • This WiFi Antenna is hands down the best. It allows me to connect to a business almost a half mile away. Two months time and this baby paid for itself. I am a very happy with my purchase.

  • This radio deserves five stars because it sounds great, the ease of use and preset stations. This radio will become your favorite radio, also backed by great customer service if ever needed, thank you very much.

  • This is an excellent internet radio. I have had the unit playing constantly from the time I received it. Excellent sound for such a small unit and the remote works wonderfully.
    — James H., Richmond, BC
  • Good sound, lightweight and comfortable; not too tight on the head. I like one feature; it doesn't tell you where to place the speakers, left side or right side.
    — Harry W., Manassas, VA
  • I purchase this product specifically for AM recordings and it has worked superbly. I wanted to wait awhile before I gave my opinion on the product. It has worded exactly as advertised and more.
    — Jack L., San Pedro, CA
  • Very nice, economical home lighting. If you're used to the white light of fluorescent bulb replacements, these will offer the same type with no toxic ingredients or damaging UV radiation.
    — Gary B., San Francisco, CA
  • This antenna does work well; however placement and the shape you have it bent into is very important. I live about 70 miles away from Toronto and receive a lot of Toronto FM stations static free with the FM reflect.
    — Thomas S., Buffalo, NY
  • I'm not sure how I gone this far in life without it. I just love it. The best sound ever from an AM radio.
    — James G., Springfield, MA
  • This device is awesome. As a contractor, I can not access my customer's network for security reasons. Now, with my office on the second floor, I can connect to a WiFi hotspot 1.5 miles away and my signal strength is strong!
